Nursery bedding

Hi all

I'm expecting in September. I've been looking for nursery bedding sets but they all seem to be very expensive and I'm not sure how much they'd get used?

What is the position on bumpers for a cot? Are they still not recommended?

I don't want to pay a fortune for a bedding set and then need to take most of it off!

I've got a few baby sleeping bags and intend on using them.

What has everyone else done?

Any advice would be truly appreciated!

They're a bit pointless imo. Bumpers are an absolute no no so all you need is sheets if you are using sleeping bags

Nursery bedding sets are pointless, basically just for show as you can’t have the bumper on with baby in it, they can’t have pillows or even thin duvets till they’re over 1. They just need a bottom sheet and a blanket or sleeping bag

I agree with the bedding sets they are for show IMO. We did buy some mesh, very thin cot bumpers as they have lots of tiny holes - baby can still breathe if up close. I know cot bumpers are a massive no on here though. We also stuck with sleeping bags in different togs - id really recommend them as you don't have to worry about baby slipping under (aslong as they fit properly) as opposed to duvets / blankets.

I did buy bed sheets what matched my babies curtains before she was born. I've just bought another set of curtains what are blackout as she wakes really early now. I'd probably say instead of going for a nursery set maybe just stick with a colour theme, my babies nursery is lilac, grey and with a little baby pink. I then bought a cloud lamp shade, wall stickers and pictures based around clouds. It's probably the nicest room in my house!

They're a massive no no everywhere. They're dangerous, even mesh ones. Hth

OP baby should be with you for the first 6 months minimum and like pp said it's just for show so I wouldn't buy anything right now.

Just use the sleeping bags you've got, sleeping bags are brilliant and make it much easier to put a comatose baby down without it waking up 50% of the time anyway. The cot or Moses basket or crib or whatever needs a waterproof sheet and a fitted sheet on top, get a few spares for leaks/milky sicks. That's it! Everything else is just capitalism trying to market you cute, pointless (and dangerous, in the case of bumpers) stuff.

@PatricksRum I asked on a separate thread but you seem knowledgeable ... do you know why the rule is set at 6 months to be in with parents? The risk of SIDS is so low before that point that I can't see what it's preventing. It's not like the rules around bedding, bumpers ect where the risks are obvious.

I'm not planning on moving my DD before this point btw, just wondering!

PatricksRum · 26/05/2020 10:21

@Pauline

It's to do with regulation of breathing.
Parents tossing around, making breathing noises, getting up to go to the toilet etc prevents the baby from getting into a deep sleep. That's the aim anyway

Nursery bedding sets exist to prise people from their money.

Sleeping bags are great, cot bumpers should be banned from sale. Unnecessary and downright dangerous.

Invest in a really good mattress and protector instead and really nice sleeping bags.

Although tbh we haven’t even done the nursery and DD is nearly 9 months and still sleeping in my bed. I can’t imagine her in her own room for years yet!

OnlyJudyCanJudgeMe · 26/05/2020 10:31

Totally for show. An elaborate waste of money and bumpers should be completely banned from sale.

StoneSourFan · 26/05/2020 10:42

Just a mattress protector and fitted sheet needed if your using sleeping bags 😊

This is a huge huge help! Thanks so much everyone. Saving me a fortune haha

@PaulinePetrovaPosey baby regulates their breathing with yours. They’re also biological predisposed to want to be near you when they’re little, for safety, too deep a sleep for them and you makes them vulnerable to predators, we are primates after all! They want to be close to us, it’s natural. Tbh I don’t understand why anyone would want to put their tiny baby in another room all night, not least that you have to travel further to get to them in the night. But each to their own.
