Futons? Yay or nay

Would you be happy sleeping on a futon every night? I mean the ones that convert into sofas/chairs during the day, both the flat ones. I like the look of the Futon Company but am keen to know how comfortable they really are!

I would be worried that they might not be supportive enough for my back in the long term. A good mattress is very important.

ladygracie · 06/05/2020 16:52

I had one when I was a teenager & loved it. It was quite an expensive one as it was my bed I slept in every night. It was very comfortable- I’d say as good as a bed but I was much younger then! I did get quite lazy about making it into a sofa everyday but as it was in my bedroom it didn’t matter too much.

GoatyGoatyMingeMinge · 06/05/2020 16:56

They're fine as a bed in my experience, so long as you like a hard mattress (which I think is better for your back anyway). But they are pretty much useless as a sofa.

If you're looking for something which will fulfill both roles I think the "click-clack" style of sofa bed is the best.

HappyDinosaur · 06/05/2020 16:59

Agree with pp, I slept on a click clack for a year whilst on a university placement and it was much comfier than a futon.

I have one from the Futon Company it is very sturdy and comfortable if you like a firm mattress. I had it as a spare bed and I never found it comfortable myself as I am overweight but my sister likes it to sleep on.

I actually want to sell it now as I have a spare bed and just have it as a spare sofa sitting unused in my lounge.

Similar to this FUTON But it has a teal blue corded mattress cover.

Can I suggest if you want one, you look on ebay for one close to you. They seem to sell very cheaply on their as they are collection only. Then if you couldn't get on with it, you could resell without losing too much.

Khione · 06/05/2020 17:23

there not their

madmumofteens · 06/05/2020 17:29

We had one from the futon company too it was very comfortable if firm I think you definitely get what you pay for 😊

hamiltonacademical · 06/05/2020 18:41

Thanks everyone so far, great points

The futon company frames are great but you can get those and then 9" foam and make 2 large mattress/cushions to use in bed or sofa mode, much more comfortable and cheaper. We had a futon but they get too saggy to use in sofa mode also tough on the hips if you use it as a spare bed for anyone older.

Elouera · 06/05/2020 18:50

I researched these a few years ago for a spare room. It seemed that majority that convert from a sofa to a bed are either better as a bed OR a chair. Rarely both. I realise a futon chair is different though. If it was simply for a spare room, it might be fine, but not sure about your day to day bed. Do you need to fold it up every day? How often would you use it?

We had a pull out sofa bed and even paid for a sprung mattress in it. It was only for occasional use by guests, but if 2 were in the bed, they'd roll into the centre. It was awful! I think like most things, you get what you pay for- although it was far from the cheapest available!

DH and I had a futon for over a year in our 20's and it was fine. It didn't convert into a chair though, and was just left on the floor all the time. It was much colder than a 'normal' bed though, because you are so close to the ground. You also cant use a bed side table in a normal way. It would be much more difficult now that I have arthritis in my knee though.

NiteFlights · 07/05/2020 13:35

I slept on one for a few years in mid-late 20s. It was fine. And it was from Argos! I was envious of my rich housemates with their ikea beds Grin

NiteFlights · 07/05/2020 13:36

Re the bedside table, if you get an ‘invalid tray’ it’s perfect - works on or beside the bed.

hamiltonacademical · 07/05/2020 14:27

This is all really helpful. I guess another option would be to put a lovely mattress topper on the top which could be put in the cupboard during the day for added comfort?

Slept on one for 2 years.
I found the mattress a bit too hard for me.

Disfordarkchocolate · 07/05/2020 14:38

I have a single one from the Futon Company. It looks like a nice little sofa most of the time, the arm rests go down to make a single bed. It's very comfortable but narrow. You need something so stop you feeling the buttons too, we use an old single duvet.

Disfordarkchocolate · 07/05/2020 14:40

If I had more money I'd love to buy one of these
www.willowandhall.co.uk/
I'd need to go and try sitting on them first.

Dilbertian · 07/05/2020 14:49

I had this sort of futon sofa bed as a bed for nearly 10y, and then as a sofa/guest bed for nearly another 10y. It was very comfortable as a bed (if you like a firm mattress) and as a sofa. As a sofa it was very deep and needed lots of cushions. The mechanism is extremely simple. It converted really easily (great for when you're too tired pissed to think).

oldperson1 · 07/05/2020 14:53

Bit off topic ( sorry op) but has anyone got or slept on an Emma mattress , I keep looking at them but as they’re so pricey am a bit concerned that I will get one and not like it.
I do have back trouble

Disfordarkchocolate · 07/05/2020 18:29

My daughter once worked near a shop that sold all these new mattresses, she said the Emma one was by far the best but she never actually slept on it.

Firefretted · 09/05/2020 13:52

Recommend Sit and Sleep futons. So comfy!
