Mid sleeper bed in a box room?

TwoKidsStillStanding · 05/05/2020 13:33

Planning to move our four year old to a mid sleeper soon - he’s in a box room (typical 30s semi, box room at the front, so am assuming this is the most logical solution for sleeping and storage...)

If your child has a mid sleeper, would you recommend it? And what kind of storage or other bits were best for underneath? He seems a bit young for a desk but I guess it could be useful as he got older?

Mine always liked sitting/playing on their bed so I'd stick with an Ikea junior bed tbh.

OpposableThumbs2 · 05/05/2020 21:32

My 4 year old has an ikea kura bed with Kallax units and drona boxes underneath. It's only been a month but so far so good.

My little one has a mid sleeper, its amazing! It has a mini wardrobe, a set of 3 drawers. The book shelves are where the stairs are. There's a desk and even a little den underneath. We put it in the box room and the room didn't feel too cramped as it was all included in the bed. I could try and find a photo!

@RandomMess, interesting- mine wants a bed with a ladder, and I did like the idea of storage....

@OpposableThumbs2, thank you - will take a look. We’ve Kallaxed half the house already.Grin

It can be a pain changing sheets on a high sleeper. The far away corners I mean.

TwoKidsStillStanding · 05/05/2020 21:48

@Eliza72, please do! Do you remember where it was from?

I hate my dd's midsleeper. But only because I can't change the bed without causing great pain (frozen shoulder makes it even worse). Other negative is you can't sit on the bed to tuck them in and read.

She is in the box room. But having had a 30s semi, the one she currently has is a little bigger. The space she has under it is great for storage and she loves it as a bit of a den.

The cats like it as they can spy out the window in comfort.

We got one from eBay with a slide. It fits the stuva Ikea trunk box and also the small trofast underneath on either side and still has space for a reading nook or someone for a friend to sleepover.

Eliza72 · 05/05/2020 21:55

I do agree with the changing sheets bit! It's a right task lol! Also about not being able to give them a cuddle in bed...
Here are the pics...

DS (7) has a midsleeper in a box room. He loves it and his big sisters are very jealous. He has an integral desk and bookshelf at each end and a small cupboard that fits under it as well, although we don't keep it there because he has a little den under the bed. We got it from Feather and Black but check what Trustpilot say because they were having terrible delivery issues a couple of years ago and it took 6 months to arrive. Such a shame, they use to be such a good company years ago and I still think it is one of the best designed midsleeper on the market for the price.

Eliza72 · 05/05/2020 22:03

I don't think they loaded?!?

DD has a mid sleeper. Even with shelves on the wall it's the only way to even slightly contain her shit. Definitely recommend them for a young kid with loads of toys. We are now looking for a high sleeper as she wants some proper sitting space.

Bubblysqueak · 05/05/2020 22:09

Ours have a mid sleeper with a slide at that age and 4 years later still love them.

CaptainCarp · 05/05/2020 22:15

We have this noa & nani 1 in the box room. DC moved into it when 4 at 6 they still love it.
I'm short & have shoulder issues but OK to change the sheets. Get up into it to change the slide end & then I can reach the other side by standing on the ladder.

Just have a few plastic boxes as storage but pretty much all toys are just shoved underneath! (out of site out of mind 😂)

We've had both a high sleeper a bit like this (for a pre-teen/young teen) a bit like this (it had a soft chair & desk) high sleeper
and a mid sleeper for a younger child. We had M&S' Hastings Sleep Station which has a pull out desk, drawers, book shelves, it was fab. Not sure you can still get it but very like this mid sleeper

Africa2go · 05/05/2020 22:28

I would add to that its worth getting a joiner (or handy friend) to hack / customise anything you buy particularly if you have a bulk head to maximise the space.

MrsFriskers · 05/05/2020 22:38

We hacked a mid sleeper and put two sets of ikea malmo drawers underneath. And a storage box in the middle to step up onto the bed. Behind each drawer set, is space to put more less used stuff. There is no hanging clothes space, so those things are in our wardrobes. This is an 8’ by 6’ room. We also put shelves and box shelves above the picture rail for other storage

TwoKidsStillStanding · 05/05/2020 23:13

Thank you all - some good food for thought here. I’m a bit torn because it would help with storage but think it might also block the light.

We will probably keep him in there for a few years before moving him to what is currently the spare room (at the point where DC2 stays in a bed all night by himself, likely to be about 3 years away at least Grin). So part of me wonders whether to get one now or get something lower for now, and a mid sleeper in a bigger room. He is approaching the weight limit for his cot bed so need to do something about it in the next few months.

I think we would definitely want some hanging space as we don’t have enough in general and his clothes that need hanging are in our room bar some on a clothes stand.

To make matters more complicated, we have a hip roof and the bed would need to go on the hip side so I need to work out whether it’s practical in terms of sitting up in bed, etc..,,

Ikea Kura is good because you can put whatever you want under it. Play space for now, desk for later. Or drawers/storage also fit. If you think he'll struggle with the ladder, you can use Trofast as a set of stairs which provides more storage. Plus the sides are enclosed which is a bit better for little ones than bars.

Strangerthingshere · 06/05/2020 10:28

We have a mid sleeper in a box room. We got one that was quite low (the high sleepers are a nightmare for changing sheets etc) but didnt come with anything underneath so we could do what suited us. Over the years it has had ikea storage units with toys, been a den with books and bean bags, and now as my DD is getting older it is just storage in boxes hidden by a fancy blanket which hangs over the side as a curtain type thing. I would recommend it, however check age guidelines as sure mine wasnt recommended until 6+.

TwoKidsStillStanding · 06/05/2020 20:32

Well, I’ve now measured the room and it’s too small for a standard single so this may determine what we go for! Also can’t fit the Kura in.Angry

Anyone got a shorty mid sleeper they’d recommend?!

BertieBotts · 06/05/2020 20:35

What's the weight limit on the bed? TBH I would be very surprised if he was too heavy for it at 4, I've lain inside DS2's and nothing happened to it. I suppose it might be more of an issue if he jumps on it, but it might delay your decision for a bit if you can ignore the weight limit.

WaxOnFeckOff · 09/05/2020 10:11

Unless you have regular guests, I'd move him into the guest room now with whatever bed you have there. I'd then just have a camp bed or something (even a pop up tent) that you put into the box room for him to use when you need the bigger room for guests. Set up the box room for his toys so he has a space to keep things seperate from where you want him to sleep, also stops the guest room from getting overly cluttered.

tinkywinkyshandbag · 09/05/2020 14:07

When my dad was younger she had the box room and we got bunk beds instead, we could snuggle/do stories on the bottom and she could have friends for sleepovers. She had a chest of drawers and wall shelves on the other side of the room. It worked for us, but I did hate changing the sheets on the top bunk.
