Building shelves into a big cupboard

We have a built-in cupboard on the landing outside our bathroom, it's full height and about 80cm wide x 80cm deep.

At the moment it's under-utilised with an old bookcase at the back for storage of stuff then we keep the hoover and ironing board in the front.

I'd really like to get a carpenter in to fit internal shelves so we can make the most of the space. I still want to keep the hoover and ironing board in there so thinking maybe shelves up one wall and wrapping around the back, with the other wall empty with a bracket for the ironing board (then there will still be space in the middle for the hoover). The shelves will be used to store toiletries (very little space in bathroom), cleaning stuff, medicines, etc - I'm thinking of bulk-buying those white plastic tubs from Ikea.

Any suggestions what I can google to get ideas? And is there a standard shelf size/depth that I should be thinking about or is it a case of fitting it to the things we will be storing?

I’m currently undertaking the same task myself, except mine is a small walk-in, bedroom cupboard.

As you look in, the right side of the cupboard is deeper, so I’ve decided to have 3 shelves down that side -each 40cm deep. The top shelf will actually be L-shaped, so that it runs along the back of the wall.

The underside of the back wall shelf will have a clothes rail attached.

On the left side of the cupboard, there will be 2 narrow shelves, the width of the left side and 12cm deep.

I found an online company to make the shelves, and I will fit them myself. The company also makes the battens (attaches to wall, with the shelf resting on top). They will be MDF, which I will seal/paint.
I drew a diagram and requested a ‘special’ order for the L-shaped shelf.

I looked on google (images) for ideas. Link below for the online company, if you are interested.

Good luck with your project Smile
