We had a log burner installed a few years ago and last year we finally got a wooden fire surround and painted it white but we don't know what to do with the bits of wall that are visible inside the surround. We're thinking tiles? But no idea what colour or pattern. The colour scheme in the room is browns and reds with white framed pictures. Thanks in advance!

Mosaic tiles will be easy to use. They come on mesh which you cut to size. Then grout with a dark grout.

Personally I think woodburners look odd if recessed but without a surround, irs all just personal taste ultimately!
We painted behind ours as a temporary measure about 10 years ago and have never changed it.

Depends on the style of your house. I'm not keen on the chunky surrounds if not in a cottage. These look nice. Different colours so can pick colour for your room or go more neutral.

Love those tiles Edith
Or just plain maroon metro tiles

I wouldn’t go black, I did that and you’re right, it gets a bit lost

I think chunky mantels are everywhere and will date. We went for tiles...yellow!

Ruu that looks gorgeous, good choice

I would go for brick or stone effect tiles for a rustic/cottage vibe if you have red in your decor brick would fit nicely.

I don't think wooden mantels will date, it's just a particular style. This is mine.
