Repainting 20 year old kitchen

The kitchen in my house is still working fine and id say that it has a couple of years left. However it is a reddish type of wood and looks quite outdated and has some scratches on it. This is the first house i own so i don't know how to choose colours and i already had a bad experience with the living room walls (which look more blue-ish than grey :-S).
I want to paint the cabinets, any suggestions for a nice subtle colour?

  • Walls are painted magnolia. tiles in floor and splashback are in the cream red-ish pallete of colours.
  • Worktop is black
  • kitchen faces north with skylights but it is still a tiny bit dark and cold.
  • i have a kitchen cabinet which is painted in a subtle white grey. id go for this colour but not sure if it is going to look too cold or grey days are over XD
Thank yous!

Have a look on Pinterest.
I think grey will be out having said that it would go.I was complaining about all the grey in magazines then ended up choosing Laura Ashley's steel pussywillow back wall and have ceiling in pale silver and two short walls one has a window and door and the other wall and floor cupboards in F&B Dimity. The other wall is exposed stone and a very pale mint green. And I love it.

Are you able to post a picture of the tiled floor?

F and B Dimity is a really good suggestion as it's a red based neutral. You could either paint the units or the walls in Dimity. Have a look at the F and B website, it shows all their neutrals as groups so you can see shades which complement eachother. I found it invaluable when choosing colours.

My tip is use a diamond paint or spray paint. Remove all the doors and drawer fronts. Mine turned out very well.
Avoid greys as they usually turn out blue.

I'm going to sound like I work for them and I promise I don't! Frenchic paint is amazing.

I would say though that I only recommend the al fresco range. I tried to use the original range on some old laminate furniture and I found it really hard going. The al fresco is self levelling and two months on looks good as new on my kitchen.

Echoing the recommendation to look at the F&B website. Their advice on neutrals and the effect of light on colour is invaluable. I think grey is I the way out but mainly the very cold greys that have been around lately - I think softer light greys and greigey greys are quite classic neutrals. But I think it sounds like you’d be better off with something more like Dimity.

I also recommend Frenchic paint, I've just done mine. Have a look at the Frenchic Fan Forum on Facebook there are some fabulous transformations
