Tiny baby bedroom

We are expecting a baby in September and our second room is rather small. We also have very little living space, so will need to maximise the bedroom space for all the baby's things. At the moment we have a double bed in the room which almost takes up the whole room, and we have built in cupboards which currently house my husband's clothes. We would need somewhere for an adult to sleep in there (annoying but essential as my husband has to go back to work), as well as a baby cot, place to change and somewhere to store all the baby's things. Current thinking is that a single ottoman bed could act as a storage solution, bed and place to change the baby during the day. We could then fit in a cot and possibly one more thing? I was just wondering if anyone had any good hacks for space saving equipment or bright ideas?

What are the dimensions? One person's quite small room is another person's main bedroom...

I would say about 5ft6 by 7ft. Thanks!

Why not just put a single bed in there for the present, and put the cot in your room?

That's definitely a possibility, only problem being we can't really fit the cot in there either. I'll have a good think!

Why do you need a proper bed in there? Different strokes for different folks and all that, but my husband never slept in a different room to me and the newborn? Worst case scenario, could he could sleep on the sofa if it was a particularly noisy night?

I would get a cot bed for the baby and then just shit loads of storage (eg Ikea Kallax) Don’t bother with changing tables etc - I always just changed mine on a changing mat on the floor or our bed.

If you’ve got a double bed in there now, that is NOT a small room.
My teenager’s room just about fits his bed and nothing else!

*single bed that should be

We had a cot top changing table which was better than a separate unit. Saved our backs bending over and took up no extra space.

I would agree that, unless your DH saves lives on a daily basis or something, he doesn’t need to sleep in a different room to you.

In the event of a really bad night, could you not buy something like this for your DH to sleep on in a different room? We have one of these and, while narrow, it’s quite comfortable.

We were in this position. My space saving tips would be:

Dont bother with a changing table. Buy a changing mat and buy an over door hanger for the nursery to store bags of nappies, wipes etc. Just lean the mat against the wall/shove it behind furniture when you're done.

Babies' clothes dont need hanging or ironing. You could just buy a tall slim chest of drawers and pop them in there in the corner.

In terms of the bed, you could just buy a day bed bed with drawers underneath. I think IKEA does space saving cots so might be worth a look. You could check out fb buy and sell for the bed.

Depending on your living room you could always move the changing mat, drawers etc into there. Our changing mat and wipes live behind the sofa Blush

I had a stokke sleepi. It's on wheels and so was easy to start of using in my room then move in to the nursery when he was a few months old. It didn't actually fit in my bedroom and had to be moved out every morning so that I could actually get out of bed properly, but I loved it. It gets bigger only as you need it and becomes a toddler bed, then single bed size as well.

Space saving cot / compact cot or side sleeper in your room.

Thanks so much for all your ideas. Having a separate space to sleep is essential for us, but some really good thoughts here. Will investigate!
