Inspiration for a young adult male bedroom.

DS2 is coming up 19 and away at Uni.

His bedroom really needs decorated. Obviously he is only here holidays and occasional weekends, and realistically he may never return home on a permanent basis. He does however still have 3 and a half years to go and it's his room so needs to be decorated with him in mind rather than as a guest room.

I've asked what he'd like and he says something pale but a colour and not white/pale neutral. Same colour on all walls but otherwise not fussy.

At the moment it's a soft pale green with matching blind but red curtains and bedding - honestly not as bad as it sounds :)

It has fitted wardrobes so not much furniture, a double bed, a chest of drawers and a desk/chair - pale wood coloured and a neutral carpet (sort of minky colour).

Anyone any ideas? Navy and mustard would seem an obvious choice at the moment but I don't think he'd like that. I'm changing the current soft green pattered roman blind for a wooden venetian one and I have some lovely pure white bedding I could use but happy to buy some new or a nice blanket and obviously new curtains too.

DS1 is nearly 20 and getting his room done too but he lives here so it's easier to get input - his is currently teal and white, not sure yet what he is going for - he has the colour charts in his room and is meant to be picking.

Even if anyone has seen nice curtains or a duvet cover I could use for inspiration.

Just don't want it too feminine or childish or bland/guest roomy Confused

Pinterest is your friend here. Even just a quick search of ‘male bedroom’ brings up masses of inspiration

For some reason I can't really get to grips with Pinterest which is probably why I keep forgetting about it.

I'll have another go, thank you :)

Google images, but Pinterest is better. I have a thowaway email account for it as it bombards you with emails.

I always go off a duvet cover colour, so both my teenage sons have striped covers but different ones, then I pick colours from that. It could be a pinstripe that I then use as the wall colour so it pops the bedding pinstripe. Or if there is a main colour on the duvet I use a complementary or contrasting colour.

I tend to take the duvet cover to B&Q and ask for the colour palette fan under the counter and match from that too.

I’ve done my sons room with pale grey walls and Ikea malm black furniture. It’s a bit cliche for a male but it does look very nice. I’ve added red/green splashes of colour through his duvet and a wall of pictures - time square, arty superhero pics, movie posters, banksy prints. Also matching shelves with some of his more classic toys/models on them, Star Wars figurines etc - even though he is getting quite grown up it’s nice to still have a few favourite childhood things in the room to keep it personal, otherwise it becomes more like a guest room. Plus obligatory guitar propped in corner - all the Pinterest teen boy rooms seem to have one but he does genuinely play!

Thanks all, I'm going to have to put it on the back burner now as he will be home from uni early, possibly tomorrow. Most of the images I've seen seemed to feature denim blue so I'm going to wait and show him. I've been looking at duvets and curtains hoping to see something that shouts out to me but haven't so far.

And yes, he has the obligatory guitar, well 3 guitars and 2 basses and seems to accumulated 3 amps now too. Room isn't very big so thinking of getting some wall hanging things fitted to hang the instruments up. Will save on adding too much artwork.
