Painted interior doors

We're buying a house from a small local developer. They're giving us loads of choice wet what we have, which is great, but today they asked what colour we want the interior doors and I'm stumped.

The house is very modern, think white walls and veluxes and bifold doors off a big family room. Slight cottage-y look at the front with a box bay window (painted sage) and a box hedge. Mixture of carpet (colour tbc, but won't be a solid grey) and wood effect Karndean on floors. Pale grey kitchen units.

The showhome (and the other houses that were finished before selling) have dark grey doors, with white skirting. I don't like it, it's too dark for me. They aren't wood vaneer doors, so have to be painted and we can't have the oak effect I would have wanted. What else would look good?

White is the obvious answer, but with all the walls white (and will mostly stay that way), I'm intrigued by the idea of coloured doors to add interest. Perhaps a stone colour? So it would go with grey or beige as required?

Added bonus points for photos of your own painted doors! Grin

I'd be more inclined to have the doors satin white and paint the walls if you want colour.

MrsJoshNavidi · 24/02/2020 08:03

White. Woodwork should always be white if you can't have actual wood.

MaJoady · 24/02/2020 09:23

I'm not sure white is the best choice tbh. I don't want coloured walls. I have quite a bit of artwork and I like how it looks up on white walls. I like how white echos the crispness of the building.

How about something like these? I think I like the second one best, but keep the architrave white.

What style are the door?

I would stick to white, but I’m not sure that’s the answer your looking for.

MaJoady · 24/02/2020 12:01

Door is the same style as in the first photo.

I like the pictures you posted; either would be fine; I don't like white for doors. Don't get too hung up over it though; you can always repaint them sometime in the future.

MaJoady · 24/02/2020 15:24

Thanks @knittedfairies! I was starting to think I was committing some serious design faux pas. I don't particularly like white either, so it would be nice to have an alternative

What about unpainted wooden doors?

MaJoady · 24/02/2020 16:28

@msmith501 That would be my preference. In my current white walled house, we have white architraves and varnished oak doors. Love them. Unfortunately, the developer has already bought the doors and they are MDF, so need painting. At some point we may upgrade to wood vaneer / solid wood but that will be a long time away.

White, you'll decorate at some point in the near future so it won't be too blend-y for long.

MaJoady · 24/02/2020 17:49

@hartof Nope, we won't decorate: we want all white walls. The only decorating I'll be doing is freshening up the white as required.

Our doors are painted in Farrow & Ball Oxford Stone - by the previous owner, and not something that I would have thought of doing but I really like them.

RoryRoryTellUsAStory · 24/02/2020 18:05

Pressed send too soon - we have white skirtings and architraves, and the door colour seems to with pretty much everything.

Cuddling57 · 24/02/2020 18:09

I love those coloured doors!

Belindabelle · 24/02/2020 21:07

My new thing is to paint walls, skirtings, windows and doors the same colour. So in your case that would be all white.

What floor coverings are you having?

If you want a colour I would go for a light grey along the lines of F&B Cornforth White. Or a greeny/grey greige like Hardwick White.

MaJoady · 25/02/2020 23:39

Thanks @RoryRoryTellUsAStory I've looked at a swatch of the Oxford Stone and really like it. Would you mind sharing a photo of one of your doors? I'd love to see how it looks across a larger space... Do you find it looks very beigey?

I'm also considering something like London Stone if the Oxford Stone is too light. Or Modern Elephants Breath if it's too beige

Thanks @Cuddling57. I'm converted too!

I love your first photo.
My doors are all Hardwick white by Farrow and Ball.

MaJoady · 25/02/2020 23:47

@Belindabelle We're having a mix of carpet (colour tbc) and wood effect Karndean (light worn oak). The Karndean has both warm and cool grey tones and we probably will go for a greige carpet: I find solid grey too harsh and cold. I'm thinking soft cool tones, which feels a bit fresher to me than solid grey.

I like Hardwick White, but would worry I'd get bored of the green tones. Carnforth White might be a good one to check out though, it seems grey, but with some warmth?

Thanks @Alwayscheerful Those are Purbeck Stone from a Farrow and Ball pin on Pinterest. Do you find the Hardwick White to be quite green?

I'd go pale than Oxford stone. I
Like your photos. Is it shaded white, do you think?

Kitsmummy · 27/02/2020 08:11

We have drop cloth against white in a cottage, looks lovely, I’ll try and add some pics...

Kitsmummy · 27/02/2020 08:17

Also painted skirtings etc...

@MaJoady yes, Hardwick White has a slight hint of green downstairs but not a hint of green upstairs -because there is more light, and dual aspect.
I started painting with skimming stone but it was too pale/ washed out . I love Hardwick White, it has a good depth of colour, it is very forgiving, looks great with White walls but I would go for Purbeck stone be next time.
