Views on mirror splashbacks

We are having a new kitchen which will have an L shape with oven run and sink run and an island with a hob. The sink will be on one of the L walls and does not have a window behind it.

My DH is very keen on having a mirror splashback behind the sink to brighten the space. It could be a copper or grey or antique effect. I am not so keen on the idea of being able to see myself whilst washing up. What do others think? Has anyone installed one of these and been pleased with it? We do have a dishwasher so will not be spending too much time washing up.

Does anyone have any other suggestions for the space behind a sink when there is no window?

Never heard of one of those....do you have a picture as an example?

Good luck with cleaning it Grin

Looks nice, will make it spacious but like pp has said you'll be cleaning that every day as water will keep splashing up on it. I have a similar mirror in my bathroom and put a karcher on it every other day. (Also smears really easily which is annoying)

I wouldn't use actual mirror no. it might look ok when the room is completely spotless but it will make everything look worse for all the time when it's more than 20 minutes since the cleaner was last there.

I have glass splashback that are colour matched to a bright colour element of the rest of the decor and they look great. when researching them I found that you can get glass splashbacks made with a photo printed on the wall side of the glass - so you could get maybe a picture of some stunning scenery - something that you would love having a view of? printed large enough that it almost feels like a window?

We opted for a stainless steel and copper mix (stainless steel at the cooker) and copper (well shiny copper toned panels) round the rest. I love it, it reflects the light really well... But any more reflective and we'd end up with a headache as it can get a bit of a glare - in the same way sunlight hitting a mirror does. Reflective is good, but if be careful with how much you need.

I like the sound of the copper Blastandbollocks. Would you mind telling me where you sourced it from.

Will investigate the printed glass TalaxuArmiuna , that sounds good too.

Just the issue of convincing DH. He is not great at tidying or cleaning and I can see the mirror looking nasty pretty quickly.

Getting a bit overwhelmed by all the decisions for a kitchen, there seems to be too much choice.

I have a mirror behind the hob. I really like it as I don't have a window (kitchen extended into a dining room with velux windows). It reflects the light back. I do need to clean it after cooking. However, I wouldn't have it behind a sink as it would need to be rubbed down every time the sink is used.

Blastandbollocks · 14/02/2020 09:46

Howden's
I've attached a picture (please ignore the finger marks, DH cooked last night! Blush ) of the way our builder did it - the steel splashback is behind the cooker for heat, and then the copper is adjacent. This bit is on an East wall under a wall cabinet (so no direct light source at the moment) and you can see it's reflecting already.

We ended up painting the kitchen a much darker colour to tone it down.

Not behind a sink due to splashes.

I would go for glass or glossy tiles to get more light.

I have an antiqued glass splashback. It really doesn’t show marks and I clean it once a week. Be very careful with the type of one you some look just like a mirror. I think the level of antiquing is important for hiding Marks/smears.

crazydiamond222 · 17/02/2020 09:48

Thanks Claireshh, where did you get yours from?

Maybe your not messy but IME mirror shows marks finger prints smears etc very badly. We have it around our window seat and it does make everything feel lighter and sun reflects off it and all over the room but it is slightly tedious to keep clean and I’m not house proud by any stretch of the imagination.
We have “back painted glass” behind our sink run. We did it because the back part of my house is 17th century and to say the wall wasn’t flat was an understatement so tiling would have been difficult and I could find any tiles I liked regardless of cost.
I’d never heard of or seen it before we installed it but it’s bloody marvellous stuff. I was sceptical when my DH suggested it he works in very high end interiors and apparently it is or was done a lot. Its so easy to install you just glue it on the wall, you get plug holes or what ever pre cut, you don’t need a tiler and you can’t see how bad the plaster is behind it. It’s a doddle to clean and you can have any colour you like we had a F and B pale cream the same as we were painting the wall it’s nice and light. It looked really clinical when it first went up and out of keeping with the house but I’ve stuck photos post cards etc all over it. Everybody comes who comes in my kitchen loves it and thinks it’s a clever idea.
After we did it I visited friend and she also had back painted glass as splash backs on her brand new eye wateringly expensive kitchen walls but the quality wasn’t anywhere as nice as ours. Ours wasn’t cheap at nearly £2k it’s only about 10 ft long and 3 ft high but it made me realise you definitely get what you pay for and as we didn’t need a tiler, someone who could work a miracle and turn a bumpy knackered old wall into something you could tile on and then the cost of tiles (should I have ever found some I liked ) all in all I guess it wasn't that expensive. This also applies to the mirror, again you get what you pay for. We used some chi chi expensive glass company that my DHs company uses.
