Hello, we are getting our existing white timber windows replaced as well as having an extension. The extension will have bifolds and we are considering them in either anthracite or black. They will all be aluminium with slim frames. What do people think about anthracite or black for the rest of the house?

This photo shows a very similar house with anthracite windows. We have the same combination of tile and brick. Do people think this looks ok or would white or black be better? We don't want to put people off when we come to resell.

What about internally? I am tempted to go white internally with just anthracite in the more modern extension. What do people think?

Internally white all round including bifold. Externally I love the sage green window frames with this house colour. Less stark than white but softer than the very dark greys.

I like them and I’ve noticed the recent renovations and extensions of the 1930s houses around us are all using grey/black windows. I’ve not seen any white windows, now that I’ve thought about it!

Thanks both, inforthelonghaul would like to go sage green or another colour but they work out much more expensive as white, black and anthracite are the default ones.

We thought we would get away with anthracite on the inside in the extension as it will be a big open plan space with a modern kitchen and white walls. What do others think?

Go for black with white internals

crazydiamond222 · 31/01/2020 09:19

Mamia, why do you think black over anthracite?

It depends on how you decorate internally - if you going on all out modern with white walls then black would be fine but if you love colour then it could be tricky. Plus if you are looking for re sell then white is more neutral internal.

RestorationInsanity · 31/01/2020 09:28

I agree with @Mamia15. In my opinion, I think anthracite will date/can look like black that has faded, but on a house like that, black will always look classic.

I’d go for anthracite. I really don’t like when people have white window and anthracite/black bi-folds Shock.

Black is more classic as well as very trendy - think of all those beautiful period buildings with black windows that you see in London.

Anthracite looks like it's been faded by the sun.

White inside means decorating decisions are easier.

Look on Pinterest and you'll see what I mean about black windows

crazydiamond222 · 31/01/2020 09:53

Thanks for your thoughts. I was wondering if anthracite would date too.

On the inside of the extension we would have to go for the same colour as the outside though as we are having a large 2 storey gable window and 2 tone is very expensive. It will all be modern, open plan and white though and the frames will be slim. Do you think we would get away with black internally here if the rest of the house is white windows inside?

Yes that should work fine for the extension - it sounds awesome!

Nekoness · 02/02/2020 14:36

I think the white windows will date it too, but it will date it incorrectly. If everyone is doing anthracite now, yours will look a decade older. It’s a bit like bifold doors look like home improvements from a decade ago and now everyone is doing black steel frames doors.

We’ve just had agate grey (RAL 7038) put in which is a light grey but in certain light does look a little like sage green. When we were researching colours the new trend for windows is apparently elephant grey/RAL 7001 which looked a little blue/grey.

If you’re going for aluminium it might be worth buying a RAL colour chart as I’m sure unlike uPVC you can colour match them and if you’re spending the premium on aluminium it’ll be good to get a colour that suits your house perfectly.

Incidentally we had our bi-folds matched with the same colour as our windows and it was an extra £914 + VAT!!!! Shock
