Totally redecorating living room... 1920s house so a few period features. Sanded wooden floors, quite pale wood.

What colours go well for walls, new sofas, and big rug?? I've never been very arty, but I know what I like when I see it!

Please no grey!!!... I don't think, anyway. Everyone seems to have grey these days.

I like quite bold colours - am actually thinking of navy blue walls or possibly orange couches - but the rest of the family are a bit horrified at the prospect...

Any guidance hugely appreciated!

Navy walls and mustard or pink sofas would be fabulous

Sounds amazing, if I can get the family to agree! And what colour rug would go with that lot, do you think??

Or navy walls, blue sofa and add orange, red and/or yellow accessories like rug, footstool, lampshade etc.

He yourself on Pinterest- loads of inspiration there.

Have a look at laura ashley some fab stuff in there for older houses.

Oooh I like your style. I have Inchyra blue on walls with pale grey sofas and mustard accents. Love dark walls.

WineGummyBear · 29/01/2020 19:18

KittyKat has it. Sounds beautiful

One way to do it would be to find a rug you really like first, and then pull some of the colours from that for your walls and sofa.

Teal and mustard is fresher than navy and mustard, imho. Rose pink and chocolate brown works well and feels cosy without being oppressive. I also like forest green combined with a lighter, almost acid, green.

Some great ideas here, thank you! Rug first sounds good... teal and mustard... yum!

Pinterest scares me. I know I need to get over this.

You don't have to use Pinterest, sometimes it's better just putting "blue and mustard living room" into google and look at the images.

I like turquoise with red. A softer version is teal with foxy-coloured orange. Looks amazing.
Dark green with pink is quite in at the moment.
Navy with gold and a greyish-lilac is nice.
If you go in the Farrow and Ball site, they have in their paint pallette a scheme suggestor, which does toning or contrasting colours- I get lots of ideas from that.
Essentially you want colour from opposite ends of the colour wheel.

I'm in the process of choosing colours for the living room. So far I'm drawn to teal/petrol blue/purple. I might consider a bit of mustard too.
Depending on your budget, have a look at the Harlequin velvet amazilia curtains, lush but pricey.

You will find some amazing inspiration in Instagram if your search 'Victorian house', 'Edwardian House' etc. Many include the bold colour scheme you like (Victoria Road Restoration has a dark blue lounge with ochre sofa which looks fabulous).
There are so many more!
If you wish to avoid grey but want to consider a neutral colour; perhaps check out Number 4 On The Park - stunning.

Both the aforementioned Insta accounts have an underscore ( _ ) between each word in their name but MN just underlines everything when I add it in Hmm
