Toddler boy bedroom decor that won’t age too quickly?

Hi, I’m going to move my little boy, who is 20months old, into a bigger room (3mx3m) and keep the nursery/box room as my office (I work from home 1 day a week).
This is partly because I never had a room of my own growing up and I want his room to be his special place and double-up as a space for him to read and play.

I’ve looked at tons of images on Pinterest but they all seem either too babyish or too grown up for him, and I don’t know what to do!

May I ask your opinion/ suggestions on this?

He likes animals - is an woodland animal or animals of the world decor likely to last longer than a couple of years or will he grow out of it really quickly?

In terms of what I’m envisaging :
Ive got a light pine single bed already (not golden colour, more neutral) and will buy matching storage cabinets
My little one is really into reading, so I’ll make sure there is a reading corner.
At the moment the room is a dark teal (Deluxe teal tension) but the room is east facing, and has a dark brown wooden floor, so I’m guessing I should either paint the top half white or a warmer neutral light colour, and add a rug in a lighter colour.

Can you help me? I would really love hearing from your Experiences - any regrets?

Wall stickers are easy - you can just change them as they grow up without too much fuss.

Woodland would certainly last until six or so. We painted ours white and have wallpapered one wall neutral check (blue) and painted the solid furniture off white. Large bean bag. Bookcase.

Yes the world map sticker with animals would last years. We have it in the playroom and it's so nice. Also ikea sell lovely wall leaves that are inexpensive and would be nice in the book corner.

Beige and shades of green & khaki which will go with the dark wood floor. You can then go with farmyard, woodland or dinosaurs and change it to camouflage or football etc later on.

We have light blue walls and a neutral carpet. We've gone for dinosaur curtains and light shade. He absolutely loves it and is constantly pointing at the dinosaurs.

How about this, you can change it quite easily.

We got a large short pile dark blue rug from Argos, (about £30) that DD does lay on and does her colouring & cutting out on, pen wont show up on it if she got it on the rug although we buy Crayola washable pens!

paint walls a pale colour curtains striped or checked when slightly older this will be fine with plainish duvet which can be changed easily

I would go with something like bluish grey wall or green walls mainly blue or green curtains with maybe a thin stripe of red or orange
use the same contrast colour for a bean bag for reading and maybe the light shade

we live in a period property for windows are long and we need custom made curtains as 3.2 metre drop so when they were made they really have to last until she is an adult so the walls are off white and the curtains were made in duck egg blue when she was younger the accessories were all pink and butterflies with a blue and pink unicorn duvet she pictures of cute animals on walls the carpet was pink and old but left it until she was of an age when she wasn't likely to mark it or get felt pen on it, it is about to be re-done in something neutral as again I expect it to last well over 10 years
now she is 10 the basic colour scheme still works but the pictures have changed, the duvet cover has changed she has less toys and more clothes. she is thinking about wanting pale blue walls which will be fine and leaving it white above picture rail
because of the cost of re-doing we choose the expensive bits that won't change but the room has changed easily as she has grown it is amazing what difference a new duvet set, a lampshade and pictures make
avoid getting cute cabin beds buy a single bed that is strong with a decent mattress and full length so it will still be fine when he is 16, same with furniture make sure wardrobe will still fit his clothes in if he grows to 6' by the time he is 15

Thanks, everyone!! I’m keen to have a cheerful bedroom for the little one!
I like the idea of using colours that can be easily adapted later on! A good tip as well simply changing the lampshade and bed linen as and when.

Littleshortcake what wall map sticker are you referring to?
Also about a wardrobe - when does this begin to be essential? Primary school due to uniform?

Thanks, everyone!!! xx

We've got a beautiful pale blue on the walls. We've hung pictures of individual family members (and dog!) in white box frames (ikea) and some funky colourful animal pictures from a local artist
As he gets older we'll just change them.
