How would you conceal a window left over from an extension?

Hi all, I’m currently living in a rental property. My dining room back wall used to be the actual back of the house but it’s since had an extension added to make a bigger kitchen. However it’s a bit of a botch job and they’ve left an ancient window in the wall between the dining room and kitchen (so you can see through the window into the kitchen). It’s one of those old single glazed windows with the slats at the top that open like a blind. I want to conceal it As it’s so ugly (rusted, some paint splattered on it etc) and in general I don’t want a window between two rooms. I’ve thought about putting a mirror or something over it however it’s quite large. Obviously it’s a rental property so I can’t actually do any permanent building work. Any suggestions apart from blinds?

Large fabric wall hanging such as appliqué or patchwork?

Is it recessed so that you could put some backing paper (eg wallpaper) over the window and slot in small temporary shelves for some decorative items?

Has it got a window ledge that you could grow a plant or two on?

Look on Amazon for a large cheap map, often colourful and easy to hang?

Ask your landlord if they don’t mind your plastering over it. I doubt they will.

theemmadilemma · 30/12/2019 15:35

Pic would be useful Smile

@AdaColeman that is a very good idea but it’s only recessed by about 8cm and because of the slats in the top it wouldn’t be even Sad

Please excuse my recycling pile behind it, but as you can see it’s ancient and ugly. The last tenant had a net like it was a proper window which looked even worse

Canvas that fits the hole? Or make it pretty clean up the frame ask if you can paint it or paint them to what colour they’re meant to be, maybe even stain glass type transfers and use it as a serving hatch if it still opens?

It doesn’t open apart from the slats at the top, I’m just completely at loss. I’m planning to freshen up the dining room in a few weeks (new floor and fresh white paint) so I don’t want to just leave the window as it is

You can buy stick on ‘stained glass’ from some diy stores. You put a tiny little drop of washing up liquid mixed with water into a spray bottle, spray the window and stick it on. It works really well and the light shining through it can be beautiful.

I'd hang a wall hanging over it. Well I wouldn't because I quite like weird quirky features like that Blush but if you want to hide it, that would work

melissasummerfield · 30/12/2019 16:26

Couldn't you just cut a piece of MDF to cover it then gloss paint it?

I feel you pain OP , we had similar thing where the bathroom window looked out into the utility room Grin

LittleBearPad · 30/12/2019 16:28

Is it there to add light?

Might have been the way they got planning permission.

A wall hanging or similar would be nice if it doesn’t make it gloomy.

Di62 · 30/12/2019 16:30

Have you considered how much light you will loose in the middle room?

katewhinesalot · 30/12/2019 16:33

I'd get a huge lightweight canvas and hang it over it. Ikea do huge ones. Do the same on the other side, or a mirror as you suggested.

sadchristmas1 · 30/12/2019 17:00

It can’t be for the light because there’s also double doors next to it that open up into the kitchen. I think it’s just them being lazy and doing a bit of a botch job to be honest. The room is a bit gloomy anyway so I’m going to get some wall mount lights to put around the room

This idea works really well and is cheap and easily removable. I got lace for pennies in Ikea. The light is quite bright through it.

Might work for you

Santasy · 30/12/2019 17:09

Or...I had a carpenter make a wooden frame that hangs on hooks over a door I want to conceal. I covered it with wallpaper, plain white to begin with and I put a wall sticker over it, then patterned wallpaper but basically it can be changed easily and cheaply and the only damage to property is the hooks above to hang it.

MapMyMum · 30/12/2019 17:31

A bit like the stained glass idea, can you use stickers that make it look frosted in a pattern you like? Still get the light through, can remove when you leave and blocks the view. Its also cheap!

MirkwoodMiss · 30/12/2019 18:03

You can get some really gorgeous book themed wall papers. I have an alcove papered like this, but you can cut some MDF to the recess size, paper the MDF and fit to the recess- instant book shelfSmile

Or try a genuine book case?

Mosaic123 · 31/12/2019 16:18

I think book wall paper is a great idea. Or a canvas print each side. Don't worry about it fitting in the recess. Better that it covers the window and it's frame if possible. Or buy blank ones and paint your own.

theemmadilemma · 01/01/2020 01:44

Oh I like the book paper on mdf idea

starfishmummy · 02/01/2020 16:13

Do you live in our house OP?

I have a curtsin pole with a piece of nice handprinted fabric

Whoops75 · 02/01/2020 16:19

Internal Windows are awful.

I think the wallpaper idea is great, use mdf to make the surface level.
