Where do you put your ‘objects d’arts’?

We have some lovely figurines given as wedding presents, engraved glasses, carved items from travels, DD’s first tooth box and rattle, music box etc. These currently sit in a decades old style glass fronted cabinet. Cupboards at the bottom house photos (yes those things we used to print out in our youth).

We plan to do up the living room and this cabinet thing whilst practical as you only need to dust a few times a year, just has to go, it is hideous. We might put in a fireplace, the mantelpiece will give a home to a few items. But what about all the other stuff? We have a sideboard in our dining room crammed with china and could get another for the living room but not sure if it is the right thing, also can’t bear the thought of all the dusting as they’d just sit weirdly on the top. We don’t want to just bung the items in the loft as people visit and the items can be a talking point about what was given to us, travels, memories etc. Ideas please! Thank you.

As per my username we’ve just bought some ladder shelving which I am looking forward to putting lots of lovely things on. Something like this from John Lewis

Have you considered having just a few out at a time and rotating them? I find with 'objets' however lovely, after a while they become part of the background and you cease to notice them - also, too many on display can look cluttered. Rotating them solves that and also gives a chance for a thorough dusting.

I love very much the look of the ladder thing but wonder how practical it is with two energetic cats? Any cat owners with one?

I like the idea of rotating but think this could become a cause of angst as what if I don’t have the right item out when the relevant person visits? I suspect I’d have to do away with them and have more of the family travels and baby items rather than the gifted items. I think this is going to be more of an emotional journey than a DIY one!

If you can remember which item relates to which person, you could make sure it was out to be enjoyed when they visited.

I'm fairly sure my youngest cat would view that ladder as a giant cat tree, or scratch pole, or both! It would probably be OK if you could fix it to the wall, though.

We have a built in shelving unit in an alcove, and rotate things around so it looks fresh. There’s a few photos which stay, then various things from travels that get swapped in and out.

It can become a dumping ground for paperwork and stuff, but I’m trying hard to keep it looking decorative and clutter free.

Glass fronted box on the wall? Might need to have it made though.

We actually do have cats and they just ignore the shelving - but appreciate others might not!
