Help please: Hague Blue match with dylon dye -Navy? Denim Blue?

About to paint our living room F&B Hague Blue. The room actually won’t be very dark, three of 4 walls have windows (one set are French doors taking up most of the wall), there’s a lot of original victorian woodwork which will be white, large fireplace, light coloured carpet etc...so given everything that’s going on in the room, I plan to dye our sofa covers to closely match/tone in with the walls.

I’d be really grateful if people who have Hague Blue could take a look at the dylon machine pods and tell me which they think is likely to be the best match or tone in nicely with it. This link takes you to Navy but there are more colour options you can look through.

Thank you very much!

Anyone? I’ve had a google and am thinking the jeans blue...

SeekingShade · 28/10/2019 13:08

Navy dye tends to have pink in it, so is a more purpley blue. I think hague blue is greener? Denim blue might be a better colour match but lighter.

flirtygirl · 28/10/2019 19:02

I've just bought both dyes, they are nice dark blues but the denim blue is a little greener.

Good price on amazon 3 for £15.

Dye colour changes with weight of fabric remember, might be simpler to buy Hague Blue looking actual fabric from a shop

heatingsoup · 28/10/2019 19:11

Following with interest as I have a similar plan!

heatingsoup · 28/10/2019 19:11

Could you use both colours together? Or a blue and a darker colour?

What about this?

I have Hague blue walls but honestly think none of those blues will match but the greens or orange will complement it nicely. I would say olive green would be the best.

What fabric are your cushions? Do you have a spare throw cushion you can test first? It will take a huge amount of dye to dye a whole sofa and any thread on show will prob be polyester and not take the dye.

DC3dilemma · 29/10/2019 18:09

Thank you all.

That olive green suggestion @minesagin37 might be the solution to it all, actually, i’ll think about that when I see the results of my planned test...

So I am going to investigate the blue option a bit further as my preference given the business of the room generally is to have the sofas tone in rather than contrast, here’s my plan:

Samples of Hague Blue and Stiffkey Blue, painted up on A3 sheets.
Dye some stuff Dylon Denim Blue -old pillow cases, touch up an old pair of jeans and a clipping of my sofa fabric -it came with a sample, presumably for repairs. Do similar with Navy Blue -I could do with a couple of Navy pillowcases for my bedroom. I’ll then work out what two blues go well together/ I can live with.

The long term plan is new sofa but after a whole load of renovations paid for this year, I could do with 12 months to save again. So any compromises will be made on the sofa colour rather than the walls. We are far north and I think Stiffkey might be too cold.

The sofas are two small John Lewis Bailey sofas with entirely removable cotton covers. They are over 10 years old and been washed many, many times so I think they should dye well despite having had flame retardant coating originally. They are currently duck egg blue (with a black biro smiley face on one arm) with matching stitching which I know is unlikely to take up any dye. It’s going to take about 14 dylon pods and a whole lot of washing machine time but i’ve weighed the covers and think (hope) it is do-able. Although at the age of the sofas, which have supported my enormous arse through 3 pregnancies and prolonged time in one spot breast feeding, if it goes wrong then so be it!

DC3dilemma · 29/10/2019 18:17

Thanks @flirtygirl, amazon have that offer in the long term, which makes it such a cheap option, worth trying!

@heatingsoup argh...I know...I also think the simplicol petrol Blue looks like a really good option to capture the slight greenness of Hague Blue...but I just really worry about the negative reviews Simplicol seems to get compared to Dylon. I’ve used Dylon more and feel fairly relaxed about that. Have you used both? I have tried mixing colours before and it can work reasonably well, but the outcome isn’t as predictable or as consistent as you’d think and as I’ll have 6 separate washes to get everything though, thought I better not complicate it.

PestyMachtubernahme · 29/10/2019 18:18

I'd be tempted to call JL and enquire about getting replacement covers.

Dying that much fabric is unlikely to result in consistent colour. Are you after a hippy chick effect?

DC3dilemma · 29/10/2019 18:19

@666onmyhead buying fabric and making large throws might be an option too...making actual fitted sofa covers is probably beyond the time and energy I want to invest in this.

DC3dilemma · 29/10/2019 18:24

@PestyMachtubernahme replacement Bailey sofa covers are over £300 per sofa. I don’t want to spend £600+ on sofas over 10 years old. If I had that to spare, I’d be half way to new sofas already. The same room as had a new fireplace, french doors, radiators, electrics etc in the past few months so looking for a cheap medium term solution.

Definitely do not want the hippy tie dye look. When I have washed my covers in the past the largest aspect (the entire fitted cover excluding all the loose cushion covers) is only a half load of my machine so with 5 pods (600g of fabric per pod) I think there should be good distribution and saturation...think...hope...

TheFutureMrsB · 29/10/2019 18:25

I have managed to dye sofa covers in the past from a pale green to a dark grey although I was aiming for black. It was easy enough but I did underestimate how much dye it would take at first, I think I ended up doing it 3 times to get the dark grey with just the main cover in alone and then the cushion covers in a separate load, still worked out cheaper than a new sofa at the time.

DC3dilemma · 29/10/2019 19:21

@TheFutureMrsB can I ask, did you repeatedly dye to get depth of colour or to deal with patchiness and get better coverage?
