Okay I've bought some ready mades for the first time ever. They are 12 cms too long for a long window. They are lined too (fixed lining.)

Ideally I know I should unpick the linings from the edges and shorten both the actual curtain and the linings (and would need to cut both.)

BUT is being lazy and simply turning up going to work- or will the drape not work? In other words would having the hemmed edge of the lining turned up inside the curtain mean they didn't hang very well?

You might be better off unpicking the top edge - taking off the curtain tape and removing the extra length from there from both curtain and linings . Then re sew the curtain tape onto the top . Sounds faffy I l know but the result would look much better.

Pin it up or use tacking stitch to try it your way, hang it, and see what you think. I think it’ll be a bit bulky and look “wrong”, but different things bug different people.

I'm with major.
Leave the hem and take the excess from the top. Unpick the heading tape and reapply when you have cut 12cm off the top.

I used this tutorial to shorten from the top wereinstitches.co.uk/how-to-shorten-curtains-the-easy-way/

I did this for a friend recently and just unpicked the side seams and hems, cut to size, then re-sewed them. It was a curtain over a door.

Agree with PPs - much easier to do it from the top and will be less noticeable. If you're using a machine make sure you colour match your thread though as it will be visible
