Well, I think I’ve monumentally fucked it up this time!

Okay, so I started a thread earlier about not being able to get a straight edge between the inside of the window (white) and around (dark blue) and one option was considering painting them walls white again.

DH liked them white before so whilst he has started his shift at work, I’ve got the paint & rollers out. Shit shit shit. It looks awful. I know it would take probably 3 coats, but this just looks like whitewash.

I started at around 5. This is two coats, I get there’s only around 40 minutes between each coat and that could be my probably here. Please tell me it will turn out ok once there’s a 3rd or 4th coat once properly dried? I was naive to think I could get this all done & looking good by the time DH gets in at around 11 tonight.

He’d have a shit fit if he walked in now. He thinks I’m nuts as it is with painting! But I enjoy it (when it turns out right!)

Well, I think I’ve monumentally fucked it up this time!

Let it dry properly and use a good quality white paint and it’ll be fine

Aquamarine1029 · 05/10/2019 19:20

It will be fine after a couple more coats. Next time, be sure to use a high quality primer before you paint, especially if you're going over a dark paint with a light one.

I’m using Johnstones brilliant white Matt emulsion, new Harris tray, roller & brush. Will leave it another hour & see what it’s like then to go over or should I leave it for this evening & go over again tomorrow, ideally I needed it half decent before DH comes homes tonight! I’m not painting again after this!

It’s probably be ok after a few more coats. I’d leave it a bit longer between coats though.

MitziK · 05/10/2019 20:06

Longer between coats. If you paint on top of still damp paint, you either get patches or a rather spectacular peeling effect (as in great lumps falling off) about three hours later.

mineofuselessinformation · 05/10/2019 20:07

Yup, you're pulling off the first layer when you try to put on the second.

quincejamplease · 05/10/2019 20:16

Yep, first coat has to be dry before you try the next. Otherwise it's not a second coat, it's just messing up the first coat!

So, on the plus side, that's basically just one coat of paint and no further panicking required.

quincejamplease · 05/10/2019 20:19

DO NOT TRY AND PAINT IT AGAIN TONIGHT.

Leave it alone, let the extra thick coat of paint dry so you can be sure nothing is going to peel off, get some sleep, wake up, make sure it's sound then attempt your second coat.

youvegottobekidding · 05/10/2019 20:53

Yes will definitely wait until tomorrow until giving it another coat. I think after this fiasco, DH will hide all paint, rollers & brushes from me forever Grin

So I’ve just tried a little bit & it’s still not dry! The paint isn’t sticking, it’s just taking off what’s there. I thought it may of dried somewhat overnight. I’m panicking now that I’m going to cover this. It looks awful, especially that parts applied with a brush that are too narrow to do with a roller. When I’ve tried painting over this morning it’s just making more of the dark colour come through.

Just to add it felt dry before I began this morning it didn’t feel tacky or anything. Yes I know now I should have used a primer. I’m shitting it now in case I can’t get a 3rd coat to stick to this, what do I do then?

Johnson's paint is very poor quality. I would buy dults or crown etc

slipperywhensparticus · 06/10/2019 08:02

Is your house warm enough to dry paint

CalmFizz · 06/10/2019 08:07

I’ll be honest, I think you ballsed up painting on 40 minute tacky paint, and it’s now in purgatory tacky wetness.

On the side of the tin, how long does it say between coats/being completely dry? Some products say 2hrs but most would be 4/6hrs before applying your 2nd coat.

youvegottobekidding · 06/10/2019 08:09

Slippery, you read my mind, I’m just about to crack on the heating, that may help, although it doesn’t feel freezing, but it’s not warm warm either.

Dear god Mrs, you need to calm down! Grin

It will be fine and if DH doesn't like it, get him to paint it!

CalmFizz · 06/10/2019 08:39

Is it raining there? If not, leave the heating on with the window open. Do not apply any paint until 2pm this afternoon.

White on that dark a navy may need 4/5 coats. After you paint at 2pm, don’t apply your 3rd coat until after 6pm.

Dull, but that’s why they call it wAtching dry paint!

youvegottobekidding · 06/10/2019 08:54

Yeah it’s raining! Got the heating on. Fingers crossed it will turn out ok in the end. I just panic a bit when it isn’t looking like it should Grin

That's a very dramatic title for something that can sorted so easily as waiting an extra couple of hours! lol
