Help me with this tiny, tiny space.

I have a living room that currently is 'L' shaped, we're having our L cut off to make a medical, treatment room for DS1, this isn't negotiable, it's housing association place and is a stop gap until we can be rehoused which could take a year or 2.

There are 6 of us in this tiny house and I have spent the last god knows how many years trying to de litter and live a sterile, clean, minimalist vibe in our home. It is 100% not worked, we simply don't have the space.

So I thought that I would go in a different direction and put all the units and furniture in storage (get rid of large sofa that's currently in the L shape as it's knackered) and just aim to have 1 TV/media unit and then a couple of squishy sofas and a coffee table., some warm lamps and a nice rug. The room has patio doors but we get no light through so the room will be quite dark.

DH and I also sleep in this room so one of the squishy sofas has to be a sofa bed or a day bed and we have to keep a tall freezer in there too as there's no where for it in the kitchen.

I'm optimistic but I keen having waves of hopelessness.

Can anyone chip in with some tips?

I don't have the coffee table yes so I can always not get one. The freezer has nowhere else to go in the house, it's got to be in this room somewhere.

I will also look around for alternative storage.

You could ask your HA if they have any garages you could rent. They are usually £7 to £10 a week so would be cheaper. As long as its secure it doesn't need to be near you. Whereabouts are you OP?

I have a corner sofabed from IKEA with storage under where we keep our bedding. It's really comfy to sit on too. I'll try and find the link.

I find a nest if tables takes up less room, and is more flexible and useful for different occasions, then you could do without a coffee table, and maybe get a Pouffee instead with more storage in it.

Is it a fridge freezer, or just a freezer?

A big mirror is a good idea, as is picture rail style shelving if there are books/pictures/ small plants/alarm clock you want/need to house.

I agree with losing the coffee table. They aren't a useful piece of furniture, especially when you're trying to save space and not have any clutter.

Widowodiw · 05/10/2019 22:46

Loose coffee table. If you need table get best of tables that can be stored alongside settee/day bed. Do you really need a lamp? I’ve never owned a lamp.

Pinkyyy · 05/10/2019 22:59

Also I'm a bit unclear as to why you need a corner sofa and a day bed? Can you limit it to one large piece of furniture and then some cosy bean bag type things for the kids to sit on during the day?

Balula · 05/10/2019 23:12

We don't need both a sofa and a day bed/sofa bed, hence this thread, I'm looking for ideas.
I've taken on board the coffee table advice, I'll not get one.

We did have an Ikea corner sofa bed for years (in fact we went through three!) but the one we had wouldn't fit in our L shape so we gave it to relatives, it would be way too big for the space we will have. I'll look at others though in store when I know how much space we will have for sure.

I'm in West Sussex, I will ask about garages to rent and also give a nudge to friends and colleagues in case they know of anything. Nothing furniture wise is too valuable to lose if it comes to it.

The lamps are because the room will have no natural light. Our patio doors offer very little due to us being overshadowed by other buildings. I thought they'd be cosy.

It's 1 big freezer and we have the matching big fridge in the kitchen (which is on the plans and as you can see is also tiny) we find it easier batch cooking and loading the freezer up for when DS is in hospital as DH Sri.l works full time (albeit flexibly) and when we're home, I work full time and DS's medical regime is at minimum 3 hours a day.

Even at £10 per week storage over 2 years that's £1k.

Coldishfeet · 06/10/2019 08:12

What about one of the sofa beds that are a click clack style rather than a pull out sofa bed. In the day it will be a long sofa that can easily sit 4, more if they are small children. We had one as a spare bed, from IKEA. They have proper sprung mattresses and are comfortable to sleep on. In the day you'd put the cover on and sore a duvet and pillow underneath.

I'm guessing you can't put the freezer in the medical room else you'd have thought if that.

What about a plush footstool instead of a coffee table. You can use it as a table with a tray on it if need be, otherwise it can be moved around and used as extra seating.

Coldishfeet · 06/10/2019 08:17

Do you have a ceiling light? What about changing the bulb for one of those which you can change the colours? Philips maybe? String lights around the top of the wall for cosiness?

Balula · 06/10/2019 08:43

We have a dimming light do that would work with some nice warm fairy lights, I hadn't thought of that.

The medical room will be floor to ceiling storage for all of DS's medication. I could cover the freezer in that wrap stuff to make it a different colour pattern?

I will deffo explore all seating options before we actually buy any, even if sit on the old sofa cushions for a few weeks before buying anything. I will keep our current ikea sofa bed though, until we find something else.

A lot of our stuff can be de cluttered and gone, there's maybe 2 large plastic boxes worth of sentimentalists that I'm sure someone will let me store in their house, my Nan has a second bedroom currently used for storage so maybe I can squeeze them in there. As said the furniture can go if needs be. I'm only really teaches to the dining table because it took me forever to find one that can go fro ma tiny 1 person dear to a huge 10-12 person table. I'll take it all apart though and try and store it under a bed or something.

That has been really helpful, thank you so much. I'm feeling a renewed sense of hopefulness that that won't be as awful as I have feared. Without sounding dramatic, the medical room has the ability to change our lives so if I can get this living/sleeping space sorted for a year then we're golden.

I agree with the Ikea futon style beds ours is a Super King width I'm pretty sure and comfortable although if every night think I'd get a memory foam topper too!

I'm sure you can get sofas with storage underneath, or on legs which again means potentially the dining table could be stored underneath? Storage footstool another good call.
