Any bright ideas to hide this gas pipe in our living room?

Hi,

I'd be grateful for any bright/creative ideas to hide this weird gas pipe in our front room.

We have a destructive 2 year old so I'm dubious a decorative vase with a hole in the bottom would work!

All suggestions gratefully received haha.

Is it connected to anything? Can you get it capped off under the floorboards?

TiddleTaddleTat · 26/09/2019 19:16

Looks like it's connected to a gas fire?
Maybe a plant in front ?

ItsMischerWavy · 26/09/2019 19:40

It's connected to a gas fire and the floor underneath is concrete. It's in such a daft place!

I'd speak to a plumber and see if it can be moved to a less exposed place? Ours was in the same position but ultimately capped off under floorboards as not in use.

Maybe something like these? A small one?

A nice pink Crochet lady toilet roll cover would cover that up

I'd just stick a pot plant in front of it. Or a magazine rack or one of those decorative log holder things. A little ottoman/pouffe thing is a good idea too.

That is odd, if it's safe for a toddler (i.e nothing that can be opened/damaged/broken off) I think I'd go with a small arm chair or a side table perhaps over it so you don't notice it (and might distract the toddler from playing with it too). I think anything else could look too obviously a cover up.

Have a look on Pinterest or just google 'armchair by fireplace' and you'll see lots of examples.

Box it in between where it emerges from the floor, and the fireplace.

ItsMischerWavy · 27/09/2019 06:42

@HappyHammy I'm loving your idea 😂

Thanks for all the suggestions. I was thinking foot stool or similar too.

Sadly it can't be moved. Quite why anyone would have it there i don't know!

A little stool with a trailing plant on?

humblebumblebees · 27/09/2019 21:57

I'd put a wicker basket over it, with a bit cut out of the bottom to allow for the pipe. Then you can store newspapers / knitting / logs / magazines etc. Something like this perhaps

A table, like an upside down box with cut outs for the pipe.

GlitteryFluff · 29/09/2019 08:47

We has exactly the same when we first moved in.
We got someone to remove it, basically as said above, they capped it off just under floor level.
Thought someone was going to lose an eye falling on it.

CapturedFairy · 29/09/2019 08:48

Completely agree with humble wicker basket where you can cut out the bottom, then some rolled up blankets or some cut logs.

Mosaic123 · 29/09/2019 09:45

Won't a wicker basket unravel if you cut through it?

MatchaMuffin · 30/09/2019 08:05

I like the footstool idea. I've seen small legged crates with upholstered tops, like mini blanket boxes - eg see Paint the roses red on FB (not me or anyone I know!) Even if it's physically still visible underneath, the eye will be drawn to the furniture.

I think the gas pipe was put in when there was a bigger fireplace.

SilverChime · 30/09/2019 08:10

That’s really weird and unsightly. I’d put it under the floor, even if I had to chisel out a channel in the concrete.

BlueLines · 30/09/2019 08:14

I would extend the Hearth ( if that is whats its called) by laying some similar colour slate next to it.

TiddleTaddleTat · 30/09/2019 17:28

Ours had a gas pipe like this. Think it used to be a pretty typical way to do it

Pipandmum · 30/09/2019 17:31

Build out a new hearth covering it. You will have to be creative to make it look like it is part of the original design and matches either side. Or go the whole hog and get it moved.

ChilliMayo · 30/09/2019 17:35

I'd go with that wicker bin idea, then a sandbag so it doesn't topple/move easily and logs/fake plant/summat. If you need something between the sandbag to level it out,cut a circle of sturdy cardboard to go over.
