Which kitchen design do people think would work best and why? Standard long Island or t shape?

Standard long shape. T shape looks a bit odd.

SophieGiroux · 25/09/2019 22:46

Standard one

Jesse70 · 25/09/2019 22:49

I like the t shape and it give u more worktop space

Span1elsRock · 25/09/2019 22:50

I like the T shape. We have a longer wide section of worktop that doubles up as an eating space, and it's a godsend when you're baking.

SilverChime · 25/09/2019 22:50

Neither of them has an overhang at the edge to tuck your knees under when sitting. I’d go for the normal island as it’s easier to incorporate an overhang. Have you thought how you’ll handle the extractor for a hob on the island, and where the cooker switch will go in order to meet building regs?

PinkyLincs · 26/09/2019 08:16

Thanks everyone. Both islands would have overhangs for knee space, I was just unable to show this on the basic design tool app I was using (it was a bit limited in capabilities! Lol).

I didn't want an overhead extractor fan hanging down as I will have a set of 3 lights above the island. I also didn't fancy a downdraft extractor which I felt would create a barrier between me and someone sitting on the island. I've therefore decided to go for the 80 cm Neff induction hob with a built in extractor. Expensive but I think it will be worth it.

Everyone who has seen the plans (friends, family etc) love the t shaped island (it's a very American in style) but I am just not sure whether it would feel too big and imposing in the space? I should add that although it doesn't show on the plans (that apps damn limitations again), the room is actually t shaped and I will also have a dining table in the family part of the kitchen.

What's the white square on the right hand side of the island in both plans?

Aragog · 26/09/2019 08:23

I quite like the t shape as I think it would,be nicer for more people to sit at, rather than just sitting in a row. It is more unusual though, not seen it before.

MediocreOmens · 26/09/2019 08:24

Can you make the hob more central? I think being that close to the edge is asking for trouble.

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 26/09/2019 08:25

The T shape is more social for eating and if it were used for family meal times, I'd go for that. But if you have a table as well, the breakfast bar will most probably only be used by a couple of people at once.

I've seen a few T shaped islands where it extends into a dropped level table which is nice looking

PinkyLincs · 26/09/2019 09:14

Thanks everyone. I'm really enjoying reading your feedback. The square on the right hand side of the island is a small prep sink. It would be a lot smaller than shown in reality. I take the point about having the hob on the end but I was trying to think about my workflow. I would wash/peel veg in the prep sink then move to the middle to chop then move along to cook on the hob. If I centralised the hob (which I agree would be a better location for it) then I wouldn't have enough prep space between the hob and the prep sink to chop veg meaning I would end up carrying wet veg across the hob to chop it on the other side. I hope that all makes sense? Lol.

If the T shape has an overhang on both sides will you not have weirdly small cupboards underneath?

PinkyLincs · 26/09/2019 11:05

I will have a back to back row 300 cupboards underneath but these are mainly for support rather than necessary storage space. I will just use them for putting the Christmas dinner sets in which only get used once a year.

Where would you set down hot stuff that comes out of the ovens?

PinkyLincs · 26/09/2019 17:11

On the worktop in front of the prep sink. The island is 1300 deep and the prep sink only covers 300 so that gives me 1000 in front of the sink (between the sink and the stools). Ample space. I couldn't make the prep sink small enough because of the limitations of the app so it's difficult to show scale. Plating up has been considered and that box is ticked but thank you for raising it as it could have been something I missed.

Thegirlwithglassfeet. I know you thought the t shape looked odd. Here is a photo of the kind of thing in reality. Do you still think the same? Genuinely interested.

I like the T shape. It would be quite a social space but keeping little fingers safe as away from the hob, sharp knives etc.
I would just be concerned about the hob being near the edge. Pan handles or if your children are young but tall enough to reach up.
I got a new kitchen last year after 31 years and I absolutely love it.They finished two days before Christmas!

Soontobe60 · 26/09/2019 19:50

Sorry, but I think the t shape is weird. The photo makes it look even weirder. In reality the area where people st will become cluttered with random stuff, and to utilise it for prep you'd have to walk right round. Also, the hob needs to have more worktop surrounding it for safety. How about an L shape with the long side facing the oven and the bottom of the L facing the back of the kitchen?

PinkyLincs · 26/09/2019 21:01

Thank you. I definitely take your point about the hob being close to the edge. I might have a re-look at my measurements to see if I can pull the hob into the middle a bit more. I don't have small children so that wouldn't be an issue. My friend has a hob on one end so I will ask her for her experience also.

Regarding the t shape and walking around, I wouldn't be walking any further than if it was a straight island. Sorry if I've misunderstood your response though. I do really appreciate all these comments, both positive and negative as it gives me real food for thought.

I like the tshape.
How big is the gap between the island and the worktop though? It looks really tight.
