Any one else have this issue and how did/do you get around it?
I am really battling myself with the decor of our new home. Half the issue is that I can’t seem to settle on a style. At first I might like a traditional country style and can pick things that will go, but then out of nowhere I will distract myself by liking more modern decor and get carried away with that.
How did you choose your style and settle on it? Did you have 1 piece in a room that you decorated ‘around’?

Is it a house you've recently moved to?

Moving Friday. We have picked sofas and love them but for instance I really struggle to visualise how the rest of the living room would come together.

I'd paint the walls white.
Keep furniture and furnishings to a minimum.

When you hve been there a year you'll have a much better idea of what will suit and how the light affects the room during different times of the day and in different seasons.

Work the living room round the sofas. Make it homely and you'll get a feel of the room by living in it.

Have a look at Houzz and similar sites.

Sorry, I’m no help.

I want lots of different styles and can’t settle on one! I’d like to be able to change it with the seasons too -significantly! Not just add some throws and stuff but change the wall colours & sofas etc.

@MikeUniformMike thank you that is some good advice. We can start slow and hopefully see what will suit and what we like as we go.

@IncrediblySadToo I think we are very similar Grin maybe not so helpful but I’m glad to know I am not the only one!

Urgh I’m the same!!

I found that the walls look so different at different times of the day.
I use throws and things to make the rooms look different if I fancy a change. I kept walls and curtains neutral.

You need to get a feel for how a room works before investing in new things. Paths through rooms might change how you want to position things and so on.

Simples, I just decided my style is ‘eclectic’ (colourful/clash-match/travel-inspired/more is more etc) and just go for it.

You can always change it again if it doesn’t work/don’t like it.

MikeUniformMike · 24/09/2019 21:23

Exactly. You can get make do furniture from free sites like freecycle then pass them on when you get bored of them or if they don't work for you.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Some good tips too about keeping it neutral and we can pick pieces we like for the house but ultimately if we can make it feel homely then that’s great

Maybe this is poor advice but... I am redecorating a whole house and start with thinking how will this room be used? Who will use it? What times of day? Where is the light? Etc.
Then what sort of feeling do I want to create - eg. Living room - we use mainly in the afternoon/evening. Want it to be cosy, warm, relaxing. So went for darker colours, soft textures... not so much a contemporary/traditional dichotomy. Mix it up and do both. Follow what you like, read some interiors books and mags, Pinterest, Houzz etc.
You can combine and clash styles. It makes it much more original.
Always go for quality materials and things that are lovely to touch!

@5614blocked

Yeah, we might not be able to solve the ‘problem’ but we can be consoled by not being alone!
