Any curtain makers/ people who have had made to measure curtains around?

Just had a quote for altering two pairs of curtains and creating a new pelmet for each. In both cases it is just the width that needs reducing not the drop.
I am shocked by the quote so just wanted to get a sense of what you would reasonably charge/ pay for this in case I just don't have a grip on the reality of curtain alteration costs!
Thanks

It was an independent curtain shop I used if that makes any difference

Hopeful bump...

What have you been quoted?

Are they already lined?
Do they have curtain tape or or pleats with hooks?
What fabric is it?
How big are the curtains?

I don't think people realise the work/time this takes.

It is a lot of work. I live in the north and assuming I've already got the fabric (biggest cost) I'd assume £200-£300 to make up curtains with altering in the same ballpark.

CountFosco · 13/09/2019 19:34

Just realised it's two pairs of curtains. Double what I said.

I'm pretty good at sewing etc but altering a pair of curtains and getting them "perfect" is bloody hard work!

whensmynexthol1day · 13/09/2019 19:41

They're already lined. One is silk, the other fake silk. I've been quoted £1000 for the alterations which seems steep to me!

Sorry just to answer other questions.
They are both pretty big- lthey came from bay windows in a 30s semi - but need making less wide.
They have tape and hooks

Being lined is more work, silk can be a nightmare... £1k does seem steep though Shock can you not gather them up fully?

I think the one pair may be ok, but we also want a pelmet making (mdf covered in the same material) so do need someone to help with this.
I though reusing our old curtains would save us some money but I reckon we might be better off buying some off the peg ones at that rate.

If you want a hard upholstered pelmet for two windows then that would take up most of the price. I reckon about £100 each pair to alter the curtains and then she would have to outsource the pelmet fabrication.

Interesting. Perhaps that's the bit we could try and do ourselves then. Will get another quote as well to compare
Thanks
