Beam restoration. Soda Blasting?

Has anyone ever had black beams restored back to their natural state? Sand blasting is out of the question and I believe frowned upon these days but soda blasting keeps coming up. Paint stripper not an option as too much to do and dogs/children.

Any idea on rough cost per metre?

Leave them black.

westcountrychicken · 29/08/2019 20:24

But I don't want them black!

FFS what is wrong with me?
Artex over them.

Are they old beams and have they been painted?

westcountrychicken · 29/08/2019 21:24

Very old beams that have been painted black 😭

Artex, that would be... interesting 😂 and probably quite dangerous with low ceilings!

I was only joking about the artex.
I'm not much help am I?
Other than I would love them and leave them black.

We had black painted beams.

Didn't want them back to wood, and didn't want them to stand out, so had them painted in a matching chalk paint.

300 year old beams painted black and then covered in chalk paint wouldn't work I don't think.

I definitely want them restored to oak, I'll have to start looking for quotes so I can decide when in the process it gets done!

Not had any experience of soda blasting but there are other options to consider.

I've stripped beams myself using klingstrip - it's bloody messy but less damaging to the beams than blasting. You might find a local handyman who would do it for you, that's what I'm considering for our remaining black beams.

I've also seen companies who paint realistic wood effect onto black beams (sounds awful but actually looks amazing!).

Good luck - we still have black in the living room and I find them very dark and looming (teamed with low ceilings of course) and one day I'll get round to sorting them!
