Half painted wall for kids room

Has anyone done a half painted wall design?

Really want to do something fun for DS' bedroom when we move in in a month or so but I'm not sure I have the skills to pull it off!

In my mind it's just a bit of painters tape and measuring carefully but I appreciate I might be being very naive!

Also attached is a picture of the room he'll be in. Was thinking I could paint the built in cupboard doors the same half wall pattern so it goes all the way around.

Any other ideas/inspiration are greatly received! We've been living in a one bed flat for so long I'm just excited that he'll have his own room! He's 2, if that's relevant so probs won't give 2 hoots about the design.

I've seen a few like it on Instagram. In bold colours and done well it really works.

I would line it up with the window glazing bar, you will need a long spirit level and a very steady hand to get it right - just to position the tape

It's not the easiest thing to do and if any of the walls are a bit wonky it might throw you off a bit but would look great, if you can do it.
I couldn't do anything like this as our house is way to wonky so for DS1s bedroom I blocked out lots of lines and rectangles that went round corners etc, I painted the colours with tester pots, it worked out quite well (excuse the mess)

My sister did a wide horizontal stripe in her dd’s room. You need from tape and a spirit level. And obviously measure a million times.

Would one of things laser things be useful do you think?

And yes you're right @wonkylegs the walls might be a bit wobbly.. will have to watch out for that! My maths skills are terrible too so I'll have to be really careful.

I guess I'll need to check the paint quality on the walls as we might need to do another white cost too first. Can't wait to make it more homely! It's a bit big white box at the mo.

That's what I'm worried about @BobTheDuvet! I wonder if there's some super sticky painters tape you can use.. or if there's something you can do in the prep to make sure it doesn't leak under.

Hopefully someone might know!

I did it!! Frog tape, use a slightly damp finger and run it along the edge. So easy. Can't find pics right now but I did it heavily pregnant lol

MrBobLobLaw · 25/08/2019 18:49

Ooh we have some frog tape @sirmione16! Yes photos when you can would be gratefully received. What colour did you go for?
I will also either be heavily pregnant or have a newborn in a sling whilst doing the painting so good to know you managed it! Are you still happy with it now?

No advice but have to say what a beautiful room!

Don't know if my previous replies posted as my app is playing up when I try to put pictures on posts for some reason...

Don't need a spirit level at all.

1 measure up from the bottom your required height of the line and mark with a horizontal dash
2 repeat at 1ft intervals along the wall
3 apply tape using these marks as a guide
4 get a pot of water and dampen finger, use this to seal the edges of the tape to the wall
5 paint
6 remove paint when wet

I did a beige cream colour block, the theme is a rabbit hole - little cloud shelves in the cream part, hare cushions and fabrics, mahogany furniture, fake plants and lots of Peter rabbit accessories. I still adore it.

You're welcome. Step six should obviously read remove tape when paint is wet.
