Hi, background info just moved 4 months ago, only want to do decorating (no ripping anything out etc) for the first few years for a number of reasons.

3 Kitchen walls will be a pale grey, dulux kitchen chic shadow. 1 wall will be papered with a grey marble effect tile type wallpaper that is a slightly darker shade of grey than the paint. What colour cabinets? Currently they are disgusting/dirty white painted about 15 years ago by the look of them so they will need painted regardless, I just don't know whether to also do them a shade of pale grey or something else. I don't want to keep them white.

I know everyone seems to hate grey at the minute but it's non-negotiable as we like it and have already purchased the paint and paper lol.

My big items are black (built in cooker, fridge and washing machine) my accessories are copper (kettle, toaster, bin etc).

Do you have any colour suggestions? Thanks.

Pale grey wall units with dark blue base units?

I don't think grey is necessarily hated, it's just that it's been fashionable for quite a long while and now other things are becoming fashionable in its place.

I would love dark blue but damn dh hates that colour. We're edging towards just a rich cream colour on the cabinets because cream basically goes with anything right? I'm worried about introducing a 3rd shade of grey as the paint will obviously be specific cupboard/furniture paint so it will be a different tone from the wall emulsion and the wallpaper, so 3 shades of grey would look ridiculous wouldn't it? 50 shades of grey fs lol

You can use any satinwood or eggshell paint on your cupboards as long as they are prepped and, if necessary, primed beforehand. This means you can have any colour you want mixed or choose on off the shelf colour.

Would it be washable though? Those near the cooker especially need wiped down regularly from splashes n stuff. I dont wanna put something on that's gonna fade or rub off after a month or two with wet wiping.

Yes, of course. Same as gloss paint but not a shiny finish.

I wouldn't put grey with cream. It can make your cream look very yellow.

How about, blush pink colours, or something strong but muted like Farrow and Ball Pigeon.

Nogodsnomasters · 25/08/2019 07:00

Dh definitely would not have pink kitchen cupboards 😩. Will the cream look yellow even if the grey is very pale (the paint is more silvery, but the paper on one wall is definite grey). I'm buggered.

If you haven't already painted the walls, I'd find a colour you like for the units first then work around that. Have a look on Pinterest for inspiration.

Cream won’t go well with grey. White would be much better than cream.

goldpendant · 25/08/2019 10:09

Current trend is dark green, would look good with grey and marble effect?

Nogodsnomasters · 25/08/2019 11:53

Pinterest was where I got the cream/grey idea from. I'll try to attach pics, let me know if it works

So like not brilliant white the way you would have your skirting board, but an off white/creamy white?

We’re ripping out our kitchen next week, when we moved in it has grey granite worktops, cream cupboards and brilliant white walls. It doesn’t go!

Bambibear70 · 25/08/2019 19:01

Quick question but what colour/material is your worktop? That can make a difference as you're adding a other dimension of colour. I found when doing mine that diy-kitchens was great as they have a tool on there that lets you mess around with the walls, cupboards etc so you can see what it looks like. You don't have to register or download anything.

Stone would be ok with grey. So a grey toned shade of cream. Have a look at DIY kitchens in Mussel colour.

Warm toned cream would look weird with grey.

BelindasGleeTeam · 25/08/2019 19:12

This is Mussel. Very much a greige.

Looks great with black, white or wood worktops. Might fit the bill. Maybe combine with a sage/sea green.

I would go for a mussel colour

Nogodsnomasters · 25/08/2019 20:19

That mussel colour is great, which brand is that?

DIY kitchens

I have it. It's bloody lovely.

Nogodsnomasters · 25/08/2019 20:31

My counter tops are already grey marble btw hence the grey marble tile wallpaper on one wall. Would I have to buy that brand online? I live in Northern Ireland.

Yes, but if you have a plan from a kitchen firm you can send it to them and they'll match it.

Nogodsnomasters · 25/08/2019 21:06

Oh it's not a paint? It's an actual cupboard /kitchen set?

Pretty sure the DIY mussel colour is a match for a Farrow and Ball colour. You can have a cheaper match mixed at a Johnstone's Decorator Centre in whatever finish you want.
