Bespoke fitted wardrobes

I booked a design visit with Sharps but have seen mixed reviews and hear they put on the hard sale.

Some say it's better to find a small local company to make bespoke wardrobes but I imagine larger companies like Sharps have thought about space saving in their designs more.

What are your experiences? Also what could I expect to pay approximately for one medium sized room?

I did bespoke with Sharps about 5 years ago. Still happy with build. We wanted to build across a space that had previous chimney (so across two alcoves and chimney breast). They were absolutely fine but I guess comes down to skill of fitter too. They sent someone around to do the design who probably tried to upsell but once he realised we were after something relatively basic but done well was absolutely fine. It has a 12 year guarantee. I would possibly go local now but only on a recommendation, which I didn’t have at the time.

Should have said we paid about £2k but is quite large wardrobe

I found the 'designer' didn't listen to what I wanted at all, he just did his own thing. They also misled me about the size of some of the cupboard space -they're barely usable.

Don't get sucked in with the pull out shoe storage like I did, you'd be much better having extra drawers. I wasn't expecting to only have hanging space - only my husband's side had any drawers (good job he's moved out Grin).

Mine cost over 6 grand on sale! They didn't do a fantastic job of fitting and I had to have them back to adjust the doors as they dropped within 6 months.

We are going with Hammonds for our bedroom. We are having a full wall (I think 2.9m) and it will cost us £3100. A lot of money and a bit more we thought it would be but it is going to be worth it, couldn't have gotten as good storage in the room without going bespoke as it is an awkward size and shape.

Found the designer to be very lovely and she really listened to what we wanted and came up with some good suggestion for our space. Didn't try to push the sale either, she just said to think about it over a few days and let her know if we wanted to go with it. Unfortunately I don't know what Sharps is like but so far would recommend Hammonds.

I went for a local carpenter who listened to exactly what I wanted. I have a formerly large bedroom now as a dressing room. Huge amount of hanging space, two large chest of drawers, integrated lighting system so it lights up when you walk in (from behind the clothes, very fancy). Walnut front drawers and trim although we have no doors on the hanging space (to save costs).
It's GORGEOUS and cost around 7k.
I'm sad as we are moving house soon so will leave it all behind.

Thanks everyone. This is really useful...Seems like Hammond's and local carpenters would be worth exploring. £2-3k would be the kind of budget I have in mind although @washyourface yours sounds amazing and worth the money!

We spoke with sharps and the designer was rubbish. Spoke over me and argued about everything I wanted.

We went with Hammonds - it was cheaper and the designer was lovely. We had three rooms done, including a walk in dressing room, with a mix of hanging space, drawers, shelves and shoe racks, plus lights and mirrors.

I got Hammonds to do the design. Quote was pretty expensive and doors didn’t quite match my window seat and bedroom door panels (yes I am anal like that!).

I showed local joiner design and he basically copied it, added bespoke doors for quite a bit less than Hammonds quote.

curlyrebel · 18/08/2019 22:13

@HeyMicky Did you get your quote from Sharps during their sale? I don't know why but I presumed Hammonds would be more expensive than Sharps.
@mintbiscuit good to know that local joiners can do bespoke and cheaper than the big guys too.

They've always got a sale on, I think. It was several k cheaper though

Solina · 19/08/2019 08:33

Oh also, forgot to mention. Ours was originally going to be £3600 with all their discounts they have going on but we told Hammonds we were not willing to pay that much and they dropped the price by another £500. So it is always worth asking.

HoppyHop · 19/08/2019 08:37

Do you have a Starplan near you? We are very impressed with the quality and price of our wardrobes. Definitely no hard sell from them (in fact the opposite is true, not sure they were very interested!).

curlyrebel · 19/08/2019 11:41

No Starplan near me. There is a Spacemaker though. Might check them out too.

I am having these people fitting mine tomorrow www.hepplewhitefittedfurniture.co.uk/portfolio-category/home-office

Cheaper than Hammonds but no difference in quality of samples.
