I want indoor plants but my cats chew them always 😭

I love having lots of plants around the place, but my three cats always chew them, so either kill them off or I worry they may be poisoned.

I guess I can live with replacing them when chewed as long as they aren't poisonous.

Any ideas what plants would be suitable and look great? Preferably not too expensive, but still big enough to be impressive?

Alternatively any really good fake ones around?

Also, with real ones, why do I always end up with loads of tiny flies in the house? They must be laying eggs in the soil.

I have a new spider plant because they killed the last one by eating it. I'm keeping it on the kitchen windowsill at the moment, because they can't get to it there.

But I'd like a big cheeseplant, a palm, lots of green ...

I've got loads of houseplants and cats, but i grow cat grass for the cats which helps to direct them away from the plants!

Also the hanging planters are trendy at the moment, I have them with ivies, ferns and spider plants in. Also got christmas cactus, orchids, benjamina ficus, prayer plants, and a few more foliage plants.

I have a designated cat bush and grass pot by his climbing tree. That seems to keep him off most of my other plants. The only ones he can’t resist are any that have dangly bits of bits that blow in the breeze. I had a beautiful fern in a hanging basket in my dining room which he managed to get out of the actual pot. He now sits in the hanging basket most of the day and gives me evils if I dare to go in the room.

I can picture him Does 😆

I'm in rented accommodation, so can't really put hooks up for hanging things.

Whenever I've grown cat grass it dies off really quickly? Do you buy seeds or can you buy actual cat grass somewhere?

What do you mean by a designated cat bush?

adollop I’ve just got a little pot with a few herbs in on a mat by his climbing frame. I know he’ll chew it to pieces and make a mess of it but it means he doesn’t (generally) touch my other plants.

Adollop · 11/08/2019 15:17

Good idea. So maybe some mint and stuff?

Can I ask, do you have a problem with little flies that are hatching from the soil too?

I do get flies if I overwater them. I think the damp soil does something to attract them. If I just give them a tiny bit every couple of days I don’t seem to get them.

Adollop · 11/08/2019 17:26

Ok, that's good to know, I'll try that.

Spray the plant leaves with citrus oil. Cats hate it.

Iamtheworst · 11/08/2019 17:31

I tried cactus plants, I quite like them and the cats wouldn’t want spiked. Big fail, don’t know how they did it but the despined and chewed before long.

I’ve just chucked another aloe that hasn’t survived. They don’t even eat it, just nibble it out if existence.

Maybe loads of plants is the key.

Adollop · 11/08/2019 17:33

Ah, that answered another question .. I wondered if aloe would be ok.
