Opinions on garden fence colour

Sorry if this is the wrong board, but I’m thinking about it from a decorative perspective and wanted some style advice rather than gardening tips.

Then conundrum: we have a very old, beautiful Edwardian house that’s painted black and white on the outside. The inside is completely white and grey and ultra modern throughout. We have put new fences up outside and redone the garden.... now can’t decxied what colour to paint the fences?? We ah e large bifoldig doors in the kitchen and he garden almost feels part of the house, so they would look brilliant grey from the inside! Would it look strange when outside to have them grey when the house is black and white though? Would black fences look too dark when seen from inside? Are white fences too high maintence?!

Thank you all!

Ahhhh I struggle so much to type with predictive text, apologies!

I prefer fences to be their natural (faded) colour. Then they form a neutral backdrop to the plants.

Cloudyyy · 11/08/2019 12:55

Hmm o know what you mean about the neutral looking move against the plants! I don’t know if it’s “stylish” enough for what we want. They’re unpainted at the moment and it doesn’t look finished and tidy to me. I’m not sure why

What is the fence made of? Is it wood?

Cloudyyy · 11/08/2019 12:56

Yes it’s a wooden fence

I wouldn't paint it black or white then, I'd have a look at Cuprinol colours. It doesn't need to match the house. Personally I like the pale sage green colours, but it's personal preference.

I love painted fences. Ours are boring "natural" brown. Our neighbour's are a cornflower blue. I will be painting ours a colour other than brown when they get replaced. I think it makes a nice backdrop to the flowers and looks much more modern and landscaped.

Cloudyyy · 11/08/2019 13:05

Oh that’s a good idea Bluntness!! I hadn’t even thought of other colours 😂 thank you

Chocolatepud Cornflower blue sounds lovely!! I want it to look nice when we look out at it from the kitchen - I really wasn’t that bothered about it matching anything until we got these massive bifolds and now it has to be right! I really like the idea of sage greeen hmmmm

Remember if you paint it then you need to keep painting it. We painted in our old place and the upkeep was a pain. Nice natural fencing in our new place.

Bluntness100 · 11/08/2019 13:09

The only thing I'd say is go for subtle, elegant and tasteful op, not something bright and gaudy. It will look wrong. And be very marmite.

As said, I love the paler sage green colours, like coast mist, but there ar also some other lovely colours.

Cloudyyy · 11/08/2019 13:16

Thanks Bluntness, yes if you saw our house you would see we don’t really do much colour at all - it’s entirely monochrome!! Even our plants are ordered and limited colour scheme 😂😂😂😂 We will have a look!

Black fencing can be a great back drop depending on your planting.

TheQueef · 11/08/2019 13:18

I like tradition.
Back garden green and front brown.
I do like the cuprinol colours as suggested by Blunt.

Cloudyyy · 11/08/2019 13:29

Different colour fence at back and front?! 😱😱😱😱😱😱 I would lose sleep! 😂

OP posts:
TheQueef · 11/08/2019 14:01

Yeah. The front is tidier and formal so a sombre fence. The back fence is to set off the garden and be a backdrop to your view.
My grandad told me this many, many years ago. Grin
He used to grow roses and their massive back garden had so many varieties it was amazing.

GOODCAT · 11/08/2019 14:10

I would probably think of matching it to the colour you are looking out on in the garden, rather than the house so go green and then it is more camouflaged.

pinkcardi · 11/08/2019 14:10

We used a shade called 'putty' for our fence.

It's a warm neutral warm grey kind of shade.

Have some colour and interest, toned down the bright orange colour of the wood, but wasn't too in your face

imip · 11/08/2019 14:12

We painted ours fab and it looks great. We painted our shed a bright purple. We’ve also painted the front of our house F&B downpipe.

Northie · 11/08/2019 15:18

Grey fences will suit just fine. I'm sure you have plenty of black white and grey in the house so the theme will run through nicely. I'm not a fan of colour either and my plants are all angel wings as they are a lovely muted grey Grin brown fences just don't look finished enough imo. However I'm not a fan of wood furniture and things so that's probably why I prefer the more Morden and cleaner look, wood just looks old fashioned and scruffy to me.

Bluesheep8 · 12/08/2019 06:12

Have a look at urban slate by cuprinol I think. Grey would be perfect if your house is black and white, it's a mixture of black and white after all and looks great with green plants against it. I'll try to post a pic of ours

Cloudyyy · 12/08/2019 13:13

Thanks so much for the help and advice on everyone!! When looking outside, grey would definitely work best because the interior is all white/ grey. Husband likes grey and has just invested in some beautiful grey outdoor furniture so he thinks that will match best. My main concern is that the fence goes all the way around the house so in my opinion has to be all the same colour! It’s a black and white painted house and our drive is white pebbles as well so would a grey fence from the front just look weird??!!! I’m way overthinking it 😂 I like the idea f sage green now it’s beenanuggested, husband’s not keen. He suggested we compromise and paint it all gry, then grow ivy all over the front of the fence so it’s free when you pull up at the front 😂😂😂🤣🤣

OP posts:
Cloudyyy · 12/08/2019 13:14

**It’s green (because of the ivy) out the front is his suggestion

It needs to be neutral. I'd stay away from cornflower blue, but many natural neutrals will show off your plants and tone in with your vistas.
Stone, grey, green, slate.

Black fences look fab. Have a google for some ideas.
