Vintage ideas? 1950s kitchen

Hello everyone

We have just moved into a house where the kitchen hasn't been touched since the 1950s! It is very clean looking with white units (new appliances). Unfortunately our budget is quite limited at the moment and we need to focus on other areas of the house... however, does anyone have any websites or photos of their own kitchens to help us with ideas please? We would like to make the most of the vintage feel without it feeling too dated... I suppose I'm going that we can make it look retro without it being obvious that it is dated or trying to be too cheesy. Any help appreciated :)

Sorry no websites other than the usual Pinterest, but I would mix 50s with one or more subsequent decades. All 50s would be too full on for my taste.

You could go modern but have items on shelves or counter tops or your table which nod to the 50s such as jars or weighing scales, then mix them in with plants and artwork and if you can get it a photo of your local area from the 50s or a 50s newspaper cartoon (Punch will have them).

I find googling vignette or shelfie plus whatever I am interested gives me ideas for mixing up a few things too. Equally you can get kettles and toasters with a vintage feel.

Have a look for an appropriate vintage interiors hashtag on instagram, it seems fresher than Pinterest nowadays.

Things like Mason Cash mixing bowls and Kilner jars haven't changed much since the 1950s, and would give you a bit of a vintage look for not much outlay. You might pick up some vintage china tea cups etc at charity shops. I like the idea of an old photo of the locality.

Hi everyone

Thank you! Loads of ideas and I have managed to convince the other half to raid the car booty with me on Saturday for some China cups! I love the idea of an old local photo though!

Gingham curtains or tea towels, (if you use either of them) or flowery chintz cushions/seat pads have a vintage vibe too.

Some biscuit companies have retro tins around Christmas time that you could look out for, tins were a major storage item in the 1950s! Wink

Thanks @adacoleman such a fab idea! I bought my Dad the Kellogs cereal hift set with tins as part of a Christmas gift and they are empty in the garage...awaiting to be filled with screws or some sort! I might see if I can nab them!

Cornishware looks good.

Could we see a photo of your kitchen please?

I had a 1950 kitchen in a previous house but I’m not sure if I’ve got photos. It was before mobile phone cameras.
