High, short, wide window - help!

We are finally getting round to decorating our bedroom but have no idea what to do about this window. Any ideas? We’ve left the previous owners’ blinds up but they are fairly useless as light comes in through the gap. I don’t want to put roman blinds on because I think that would block too much of the light. Would curtains of any length look weird? Help!

Maybe wooden shutter blinds?

Thank you - I’d wondered about those but wasn’t sure if they’d end up blocking too much light (I love the light that streams in so I want to avoid blocking too much of it) Confused

I would say they may suit a vellux blind sort of thing ( which seems to be there now ) but other than that I would just put curtains up assuming enough space above windows for fixings & then @squirrelonwheels you are then into the age old question of floor length or half length curtains ( re radiator ) Only you can decide that . If that wall is straight ( not easy to tell from photograph ) and not sloping inwards - then I think curtains would be fine ( see caveat above ) . What I would say is that you have more width than height there and so either think about whether one roman blind will be too heavy / wide for both windows or do two or just do curtains. I am not sure curtains look odd if longer than windows ( if that was your point )

Roman blinds can be a pain if too wide

A very very personal opinion & to say nothing against @Katy80 I think wooden shutter blinds are better on bigger windows - BUT - it is a decent shout from her and when either opened ( on the hinges or tilted - i.e. the slats fully - they can let in a lot of light.
Sorry if not helpful - but good luck Flowers

Wooden shutter look good on all windows and do let in lots of light if you have a wider slat, I have 10mm on all of mine.

Thanks all. Apologies for the rubbish photo - it is a normal straight wall so no worries there. @BasiliskStare you’ve articulated my thoughts well particularly re. curtains! The radiator underneath doesn’t help. One day I’ll just have to plump for something and hope for the best!

What about bloc blinds? I saw them in a friend’s house recently and am going to order them for my house too.
They sit in a frame to block light completely when they’re down , but are regular blinds when you want light.

I'd suggest getting a builder in and making the window as tall as possible to let more natural lights in. I think blinds etc. Should be a secondary consideration personally.

Squirrelonwheels · 19/07/2019 12:44

We have thought about changing/enlarging the whole window but I think that’s a bit out of budget at the mo. Plus we have got used to the privacy that a high window brings!

I’ll look at Bloc blinds, haven’t heard of those - thanks Smile

Another solution could be a flat piece of fabric (lined with black out lining) that sticks to the window edges with Velcro. This can work well for odd shaped windows and peels off leaving the window clear during the day.

I would also alter the window, it shouldn’t cost too much as you won’t need a lintel.
It would triple the light.
