How would you up cycle this table?

We’ve been looking for a new dining room table and my DH randomly decided to buy this table as it was for sale for 99p.

He thought we could modernise it but other than painting it black I’m not sure how.

My usual taste is modern, clean lines, minimalistic and this is the complete opposite.

If it was you, what would you do?

Have you looked on Pinterest? I'm

Sand the top, paint the legs...

PostNotInHaste · 11/07/2019 20:43

I might be tempted to see if the legs could be cut off and new ones put on with top sanded.

I'd sand the top and paint it grey, with white or cream legs.

But I'm no interior designer so what do I know Grin

Hornet7067 · 11/07/2019 20:59

I have looked on Pinterest and have found an idea that could work, I’ve attached a pic. But I’m not sure if we could get the top light enough.

The description say solid wood and wood veneer so don’t even know which bits we’ll be able to sand down.

Also we have black/brown leather chairs, which I don’t think would go with that style table (Sorry meant to mention our current chairs on the original post). So I’d need to do something with them also. Anyone have any experience with chair covers?

I’d spray paint (

SnappedandFartedagain · 11/07/2019 21:01

I wouldn't ruin the table - I would probably sell it on Facebook marketplace for a big profit and put the money towards a table I like. Life is too short for upcycling tables.

Sand the top. You'll have to wax it or seal it somehow. Paint the legs with chalk paint then wax them. There are lots of neutral paint colours that are a bit warmer than grey, also nice scandi blue grey colours. Are your chairs leather seats and solid leather backs?

Hornet7067 · 11/07/2019 21:14

@pickingdaisies yes the chairs are leather on the seat and solid backs, no gaps.

Our dining room is two shades of grey with yellow which is why I thought grey legs.

I’m currently looking at how much it would cost to buy new legs. No idea where I’d get them from though.

I have a table just like that. I varnished the top with a darkish varnish and painted the legs grey. Looks boss.

Hornet7067 · 11/07/2019 21:18

@howwudufeel would you be willing to share a pic?

Not sure I know how to do that!

growlingbear · 11/07/2019 21:19

I'd sand it and paint the whole thing a pale greyish green. Some similar tables upcycled like this on Pinterest here

Lwmommy · 11/07/2019 21:22

IKEA sell table legs. I'd replace those and then sand and stain or prime and paint the top. You'll need a couple of layers of clear varnish over paint to stop it chipping.

RapunzelsRealMom · 11/07/2019 21:25

I bought silver chunky table legs from Amazon, super cheap.

Sand the table top, change the legs and it'll look fab

Hornet7067 · 11/07/2019 21:59

@growlingbear I do like that table but it really wouldn’t go with our chairs unfortunately

It think it would look best with the top sanded and waxed, and the legs painted a darkish grey, like the picture you found, OP. I don't think painting it all a pale colour would work so well with those fairly bulbous legs.

It's a decent table - well done your DH for spotting an ultra-bargain.

I've recovered the seats of dining chairs. It can be dead easy, or it can be a long-winded pain - just depends on the chairs. One big factor is how difficult the tacks (or whatever is holding the fabric on) are to get out.

pickingdaisies · 12/07/2019 08:53

I really wouldn't go changing the legs, they'd look great painted, or you might as well just get a different table. For the sake of a tin of paint, why not try painting them. Maybe quite a dark grey if you've already got the colour in the room, recovering the chairs is a massive job. Although if you're bothered, you could make fabric slipcovers for them.

dontcallmelen · 20/07/2019 18:07

Hornet yy the suggestion of sanding & waxing the top & painting the legs it’s a fairly easy job which you can do with a small handheld sander & use chalk paint for the legs if you don’t want faff about undercoating/priming, or use an eggshell finish which you would then need to undercoat/prime, it looks like a nineteen thirties table I have very similar in my dining room & had the seats recovered by an upholsterer with some remnant fabric it cost about a hundred pound, but was a few years ago.

Yellow legs, grey top?

It’s weird this thread has become active again this weekend as I’ve started the project today.

Table legs have had their first coat of grey paint, which has come out lighter than I wanted but I think it still looks ok.

Table top has been sanded down and had a coat of clear varnish but I don’t think I like it, it hasn’t come up as modern looking as I’d hoped. Who knows what they’ll look like at then end together lol

I like that yellow one.
