We had 7 walls in our new home replastered. That was done on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. The trouble is we really need to start painting so we can get the whole house carpeted. Extreme rush to get in as we were already meant to be in by now.

I've read online you should wait 3 days before applying a mist coat but I've also read you should wait 1-2 weeks before doing the mist coat as well.

Does anybody know the actual time scale? I don't want to do it to early but ideally we were planning to do it tomorrow so that would be 3 days on some walls, 4 days on others.

I’ve always waited at least a week, then painted it with diluted trade white which does not contain any latex.
Don’t paint it before it’s dry, in this weather is should dry fairly quickly and so should the paint.

@fedupandlookingforchange thank you. It's gone a light colour so unsure if it is dry or not. It has been very hot this week here.

I left it for six days, put on the mist coat, gave it 12 hours, then emulsion (this was at the start of this hot spell). So far, so good - no flaking.

Definitely do pre carpets - mist coat was incredibly drippy (I used one part water to three parts paint).

Light means it's dry on top, but not necessarily underneath. Even in this summer warmth it'll take three days to dry through. If you don't let that process complete you're likely to get mineral bloom through your paint, so trying to get started early is just self-defeating.

Tomorrow being 3 or 4 days should be fine - start on the 4s, give the 3s a little longer. Being the underlay coat it doesn't matter if you don't edge them together.

We've got newly plastered walls. As soon as they go light they are dry and can be painted.

@FermatsTheorem yes I've just read another that says a week is best. Trouble is we were meant to have left our old property last weekend. We are now paying rent on two houses and just desperate to get it ready and sorted.

I think we will leave it the full week time scale. I don't want it peeling or flaking as it's taken nearly 6 weeks to get a plasterer to come out.

Thank you.

So you think it will be ok to do the 4 day old plaster?

Is it plaster board that has been skimmed or solid walls with new base coat underneath?

MummyOfTwo92 · 06/07/2019 06:41

@fedupandlookingforchange I have no idea. It's a council property so they have arranged it all. I wasn't there when it was done. I presume they have just skimmed it x
