Flatweave carpet with cats. Madness?

We are recarpeting the whole of the upstairs in the next month or two. In the autumn we plan to get cat(s) so have to factor that in.

We’re avoiding loop pile due to the clawing risk, but I wondered if flatweave is ok? In the bedrooms we will have twist pile but I would much prefer a flatweave runner for the stairs and landings. We’d get the tightest/flattest we could to reduce the appeal for scratching and obv will have posts, cardboard etc as well for the cats.

Has anyone had flatweave with cats and if so how did it hold up? I know some cats are more prone to clawing than others so no guarantees but still helpful to know any experiences.

Thanks

I will soon be moving and one of my 'must haves' is hard flooring...no more carpet...of any type.

My little dickhead of a cat ('inherited' from family member who could no longer be arsedAngry) just wrecks any carpet...and the sound of him sharpening his claws from everywhere in the house just gets me so cross now.

I tell him he's a c*nt (never used that word till combination of Mumsnet and this catGrin)...he doesn't care...and I have grown to love him now...so it's hard floors for me next.

Mind...we have always had cats...and they have always picked a little (doors) but this one is off the scale!

In my experience flatweave is irresistible to most cats... sorry OP! That said my British shorthair doesn’t touch carpet, if the flatweave isn’t going to be eyewateringly expensive I think I’d take the risk personally, you do have to accept it’s a risk though.

Sad not what I wanted to hear Renarde! I think we will take the risk... the two bottom steps can be done separately (and we’ll keep extra carpet) so can be replaced if they get shredded, it’s usually the bottom step right...?

I have hard flooring everywhere.

(Because I don’t like carpets) we have pets and it is a lot more hygienic.

(It also means we don’t use a hoover, I hate the noise it makes. To me it has the effect of nails down a black board

Just make sure you have a couple of high quality sisal scratching posts for your cats. They might still use the carpet but not as much. My experience is that cats love high pile carpets for lounging and sleeping and low pile for sharpening their claws.

I have to have carpet, two very noisy children, we need the sound insulation. Hard floor and large rugs would be lovely but cost at least double, and we’d need to carpet the stairs anyway...

Definitely going to put scratching posts everywhere
