Polyester duvet vs duck feather and down

Any thoughts on which to go for? I guess duck feather and down (which tends to come in a cotton cover) is breathable, whereas polyester is washable. Is there anything else I should take into account? Really don’t know which to go for! I wonder whether duck feather and down is better at regulating body temperature?

Have you looked at silk and wool options too ?

Walkamileinmyshoesbeforeujudge · 26/05/2019 22:05

Ethically polyester.,..

Veterinari · 26/05/2019 22:05

Feather will be better st regulating temperature but down production is pretty horrific - feathers plucked from live birds Sad

Wool is a nicer option and great for temperature regulation

RandomMess · 26/05/2019 22:09

I too would vote wool!!

I originally had silk then thought about how silk is harvested...

Etino · 26/05/2019 22:09

Cheap and cheerful if you have children, pets, cups of tea in bed...
My posh ones have died due to the above. I’m holding off replacing them until the dog dies.

BikeRunSki · 26/05/2019 22:14

Wool!

Polyester only if it is recycled polyester.

firstimemamma · 26/05/2019 22:15

Polyester leaks microfibres - which ultimately end up in the sea - with every wash.

Wool duvet?

What do you need durability? or the need to was and dry often?

3luckystars · 26/05/2019 22:17

I'm not an expert but I absolutely hate feather pillows and duvets. No way could I sleep with them near me, the hard bits remind me of toenails.

Abcd3 · 26/05/2019 23:19

Silk and wool are interesting ideas - I don’t know whether they’d be considerably more expensive though? I’ll have to look into them.

I guess anything would be reasonably durable, and I’m not likely to get around to washing and drying it often. (Probably not necessary?) So I guess the most important factor is temperature regulation.

Wool all the way then.

Another thought - I’m currently single, and don’t know what the future holds, so it might be best not to get anything that someone could be allergic to! I think some people are allergic to feather duvets - I don’t know whether polyester is best in terms of non-allergenic?! Or maybe I should cross that bridge when I come to it, lol!

When I became single I treated myself to an ethical feather/down duvet.

Cost a fortune. Best money I've ever spent tbh.

I'm now not single and did choose my new friend around the duvet - I didn't continue a relationship with a vegan.

notapizzaeater · 26/05/2019 23:42

I adore my feather and down quilt, I hate polyester ones, you get gaps - I'm allergic to wool so that's a no 😟

RandomMess · 26/05/2019 23:46

I'm allergic to feather and not wool 🤷🏽‍♀️

I bought decent nice synthetic duvets and washing them as per instructions ruined them Angry washed my silk one and accidentally tumbled it on hot and high 🙈 and it survived just fine! Not washed wool one yet...

Abcd3 · 27/05/2019 00:43

Is wool heavy to sleep under?

Silk sounds amazing (washable, dryable, breathable, no one’s allergic to it), but the John Lewis silk ones are really expensive - just googling to see whether I can find cheaper ones!

We bought a wool duvet last autumn after I started a similar thread. It is lovely, not too heavy at all.

Wallywobbles · 27/05/2019 06:05

I have an amazing baavet wool one. Got from their imperfect stock.

BikeRunSki · 27/05/2019 08:10

Ours is Baavet. Full price, I think my thread last autumn caused a run on the imperfect stock!

babasaclover · 27/05/2019 08:39

I got our 100% down from Costco website. Really good prices and you don't need to be a member

RandomMess · 27/05/2019 10:04

Mine all came from soak&sleep just keep an eye out on it for offers/ cashback etc.

minniemoll · 27/05/2019 10:21

My feather and down duvet has been through the washer loads of times and is still fine - if you think about it feathers are designed to get wet....

Abcd3 · 27/05/2019 13:24

@RandomMess Do you notice any difference between the silk one and synthetic ones in terms of what they’re like to sleep under? I’m wondering whether I’ll notice a difference if I get silk (more breathable and temperature-regulating), or not.

OP posts:
RandomMess · 27/05/2019 14:04

Went to silk and never went back to synthetic then moved onto wool which I prefer to the silk one tbh.

Abcd3 · 27/05/2019 15:13

Wool sounds brilliant! Unfortunately I’m allergic to it. (Not sure whether I would still be allergic through the casing and duvet cover!) In what ways do you find it better than silk?
