Sofa - new covers and cushions

I have been looking for a new sofa and armchair but am struggling to find anything that fits my small space as well as my current set.
I would need new base and back cushions as well as recovering the whole thing.
Any advice or recommendations?

It’s only worth recovering if it’s an expensive suite as by the time you’ve paid fabric and labour the costs mount up. We used a local company to do ours (2x2 seater and 1x4 seater). I got the fabric online from modelli fabrics. Labour and materials plus 15 scatter cushion covers and new cushions for the backs was about £3,500 all in.

Thanks bouncy. I don't know the make but the chair is in pretty good shape and the sofa seems structurally sound, just tired seat pad and back cushions. It's the perfect size!

We've had a couple of sets from Plumbs. Not the cheapest but definitely worth the money! They do all the measuring, and talk your choices through with you. There are so many fabrics too - lots of pics on their facebook

I would speak to a local upholsterer for advice. Look in yellow pages as a start and then select a couple and ask for advice. It shouldn’t cost too much as it might just need re-covering rather than a total revamp. Look online for ideas for fabric and go for something with at least 30,000 rubs (fabric test) for heavy domestic wear. Also good idea to get washable fabric as can sponge
off any spills. If you love it, it’s the right size and is good quality, I would go for it.

In the trade here. Mainly the cost in recovering is your labour. A sofa will take around 4/5 days to strip down and recover as we replace everything including padding, foam and springs/webbing. It can take a day to strip out before even starting. A chair will take 2/3 days.

So it's really only worth doing if it's a good quality frame that you're going to get another 10 years out of. Also, we spend thousands of pounds every year updating our pattern book library and it's really offensive when people spend hours with us poring over books and asking for samples etc then want to source it online Angry. If you get a flaw or fault in the roll (as often happens) it's the devils own game to get another quantity from the same dye batch and often people unwittingly buy seconds or roll ends which is why it's cheaper online. Can you tell it drives me mad Grin

An average price for us is £800 to £1000 for a 3 seater settee, £700 to £800 for a 2 seater and £400 for a chair. Ask for recommendations rather than choosing blind online for a local firm too.
