Light Coloured Painted Kitchen?

Having spent months on Pinterest/Instagram and all my money on house magazines, I seem to have fallen in love with very light coloured shaker kitchens and pale worktops. Does anyone have this style - and is it actually possible to keep clean? Our last kitchen was painted in F&B - and I really struggled but I think that was more the paint (if I scrubbed it too hard the paint wore away!) than the colour (which was a medium grey). One option would be to get the kitchen but refuse to use it and eat at the pub next door daily but think my husband might query the cost effectiveness of that suggestion...

We have a DIY Kitchens Harewood kitchen in alabaster (which I believe is a F&B colour match - there was a thread on here where a poster listed the DIY colours and the F&B equivalent) with oak worktops and an island with a light coloured Tristone worktop. No better of worse than any other kitchen to keep clean.

We've had a painted kitchen the last 5 years, just gone from F&B Green Blue (or Blue Green!) to Little Greene eggshell paint on the units. Never had a problem with the paint coming off but I'm not a big 'scrubber'!!

I've got dark worktops though around, and an oak worktop on the island. I do love a painted kitchen! We've just bought a DIY Kitchens Light Grey (although think they spell it Gray) shaker style kitchen, with oak laminate for our rented property and it looks lovely.

All hand painted kitchens chip. I have a Hague blue one and think it probably shows a lot more on the dark colours so it's swings and roundabouts really. Dirt shows more on light colours but chips show less.

Can you put some pics up OP?

I have painted shaker doors and a light effect wooden top and I love it. The doors are wren and came painted. I would never scrub them just a general wipe and they're fine

Mine is painted in a copy of f and b skimming stone with light oak effect laminate work tops. It does chip with general wear and tear but I cook a lot so my kitchen has to work hard. We just touch up any knocks.

Little Greene paint is much harder wearing than F&B because their eggshell is oil based. My kitchen cupboards are Little Greene and I can scrub them and bang them and they never chip. I have F&B on my stairs (before I discovered Little Greene) and it is always chipping.

My daughter had a kitchen done with Little Greene in white eight years ago and it is still fine. She has 4 young children so it gets plenty of bumps and scrapes. She had it professionally painted and that is the paint the guy who painted it recommended. He worked all the time for an upmarket kitchen company.

My kitchen is light and I dont find it a problem with the units getting dirty. Any splashes are easily seen and just wiped off.

Ooh.. thanks for all the messages... will show you the kind of thing I've got in mind... Maybe not quite this light and I'd probably have a colour there, too (pea green being my current favourite but that may have changed by the time we get the work done). Buddy, I've actually been looking at Little Greene, so good to know that you would recommend them!

I've said to DH that we probably need to just accept the fact we need to touch up every few years.....

Most modern kitchens are spray painted in the same way a car is, so they're very hardy and stand up well to the usual wear and tear. I think the picture you shared is gorgeous, I'd happily wipe those worktops and unit doors all day long!!

scottishdaisy · 10/05/2019 18:31

Thanks, Greenvalley... our other one might have been handpainted... but won't be doing that again!

I have a white kitchen with pale grey granite tops... easy to keep clean, easy to touch up - and the bonus is you can repaint the walls when you feel like it... any colour!

Our kitchen was made by McCarron and I was really thrilled with their work. My background is as an Interior Designer / Project manager... so I’m hard to please!!

Thanks so much, H1LL! Love your kitchen. And your breakfast menu is fab, too!! Think I will just go for it.... x

Thank you! My biggest piece of advice would be list what you need to store.... and allocate cupboards.... then your new kitchen will be perfect! Happy New Kitchen - so exciting!

Ours is painted in F&B Skylight and, apart from the edges of one cupboard which has all the children's plates etc in (which got bashed a lot by them and whatever implement they had to hand as babies/toddlers), it still looks brilliant. I also love that it's a bit different to all the white/grey kitchens out there.

Jemma2907 · 11/05/2019 19:37

We recently finished our kitchen. It's a howdens shaker kitchen in white with white walls, and white (but looks grey due to silver specks) quartz counter. Will try and attach some pics x

Jemma2907 · 11/05/2019 20:10

Gave up on posting pics after tbe 3rd attempt! Nightmare on this site! I do love it though and I actually find it easier to keep clean. It's really bright and airy.

scottishdaisy · 12/05/2019 09:20

Thanks for trying, Jemma! Our house is really bright - though a light kitchen would maximise it as long as I can keep it looking vaguely clean!

I had mine made in my old house, and sourced the granite separately. It saved lots.

I like the handles in H1ll's kitchen-they suit the furniture and colour scheme really well.

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 14/05/2019 22:02

The good thing about a light coloured kitchen unit is that you spot spills straight away and clean them, rather than suddenly realising that they have become rather grubby surreptitiously.
