We're finally getting round to putting one in, can anyone advise of the best brands please? I seem to recall Charnwood bring recommended.
We don't know what size yet until the fireplace gets knocked out but we do know to buy the biggest we can

Ours is a Morsø - they're good stoves.

You don't necessarily want the biggest you can fit. The above guide has some advice.

None of them. They are TERRIBLE for the environment and terrible for you.

A burner is the equivalent of driving seven lorries up and down your road. (Some sources say six, some eight)

Have a Google and see how bad they are

Oh....Kay.......

Ours is a Chesney.

We have a Dunsley Heat slimline. UK made. Over winter we only put the central heating on for an hour at night to warm DD's bedroom and an hour in the morning for using the bathroom etc. Otherwise we just used this to warm the one room we are in most of the time in the evening.
We only use kiln dried logs but are building up a little store of non-kilndried ones to dry out for next winter.

I've ordered an Aga multifuel one, it's 2022 ready so hopefully not too dire for the environment - excited!

Charnwood. Very happy with ours

Arc86 · 17/03/2019 07:58

I have the the Charnwood Arc 5 which I think is great. It’s multi fuel so takes both coal and wood. The Clearview stoves also seem to get excellent reviews.

Minkies11 · 17/03/2019 07:59

'Some sources say 6, some say 8'
And some say it's a load of shite.
Ours is a Purevision wide multifuel burner - it's brilliant!
Enjoy you're new sto ve when it arrives!

We had an aga, it was very good. I really like woodburners, our current house only has open fires much messier.

WarmthAndDepth · 18/03/2019 02:16

We have a Clearview, and it is lovely and very efficient. But PPs are right, unless you have a compliant, modern burner, chances are you are contributing significantly to poorer air quality in your area.

Dottierichardson · 18/03/2019 02:33

Warmth and President so glad you raised this, my reaction too, although it does look as if there are moves towards banning their use.

UK air quality has reached a crisis point, with towns and cities across the UK regularly failing to meet international standards. It’s a serious problem – the number of deaths attributed to outdoor pollution each year is in the tens of thousands. A joint study by Greenpeace and The Guardian last year revealed that nearly 50,000 children across England and Wales are exposed to dangerous levels of air pollution. The increased popularity of wood burners is making the problem worse – according to King’s College London, wood-burning in London accounts for up to 31% of the city’s particulate pollution – an increase of 10%.

This is particularly concerning to air quality specialists owing to the content of the emissions given off by burning wood. Specs of soot 100 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair are one of the most harmful kinds of air pollution, entering the body through the lungs and exacerbating heart and respiratory conditions. It’s called PM2.5 (doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue but what can you do) and it has the potential to be hugely dangerous.

I found this resource invaluable when researching whether to buy a wood stove or not. Saved myself thousands by now being educated on the subject!

Even a 2022 stove emits more PM2.5 than 18x new diesel cars. Then there are the other 200 or so toxins and carcinogens in wood smoke.

Common sense suggests they will be banned very soon. You have been warned. Neighbours will soon be able to breathe clean air again.
