Do I need new paint?

I have got to the grand of age of 45 and have never decorated (mostly lived in rental properties, not because I’m very wealthy!), but I want to re-do our house. (I’ll be watching You Tube, and searching Mumsnet, for tips).

I have decided to start on our downstairs loo first as DH was going to do that last year. I’ve just seen that he has left the paint pot open, wrapped in a Sainsbury’s bag in a cupboard in the utility room. It’s an almost full pot of Farrow and Ball 😩.

It’s still runny, but my gut instinct is that I need a new pot. Is that right? How can I tell if it’s OK to use?

Any advice very gratefully received.

If there's a skin on top (like on warm milk), lift it off with a stirring stick. It might be OK if it was well wrapped up, just give it a really good stir (sometimes the pigment can separate from the base) and test it on a piece of board first – bits of paint skin will ruin the finish, or uneven stirring will show up as streaky.

Why didn't he put the lid on? That shits expensive.

Give it a good stir, if it's runny and smells rank then yes you'll need a new tin. You'll know if it's gone off.

He is a dick for doing that but don't waste money on that if you aren't experienced you will find it difficult to paint with. If you like the colours get Homebase to match them with dulux paint which is lovely and easier to work with . They do it in store .. always use frog tape too otherwise you will have horrible marks and it will look awful..

Great advice, thanks. It hasn’t got a skin just a runny, oily looking liquid on top. I didn’t look at it for long enough to see if it smelt bad!

I’ll take a look at Dulux colour match. Sensible advice, thanks.
