Hi so I will be moving into my new house shortly. Ideas welcome on what I can do with this kitchen? Won't be able to completely change it for a couple of years but want to make it look as nice as possible.

Can you replace the doors?

justforthisnow · 09/03/2019 20:39

Remove upper unit. Paint or replace black tiles, theyre not working at any level. Glass splashback if can stretch.
Replace cheap laminate worktop with quartz or composite.
Ideally theres scope for a whole new design, is that possible?

hopeishere · 09/03/2019 21:13

Agree the tiles are terrible. A butchers block for the gap?

daffodilbrain · 10/03/2019 08:00

Get rid of pointless cupboard replace with full width shelf. Replace tops/floors and black tiles
Blind at window

Agree on getting rid of the solitary wall cupboard on that wall ..... as long as it doesn't leave a gap in tiles. That'd look worse.
The tiles themselves are fine - maybe not everyone's taste, but look neat & tidy. So, on that basis, I'd put something in the gap at the end, fridge / freezer or storage unit of some kind, or table / chairs. Then something on walls, nice pictures - brighten it up a bit if that's your taste.

It’s nobody’s dream Kitchen but it looks smart and clean. I wouldn’t spend any money on it now to be honest. Save all
your money for the complete refit. I guess the gap is for a fridge freezer? When that is there I think it will lessen the impact of the black tiles. Especially once you add in all your bits and pieces, Chopping board, fruit bowl , plant , it won’t seem so bad.

SwedishEdith · 10/03/2019 10:43

It's not that bad - I wouldn't spend loads of money on glass splashbacks (which will date as well) or quartz worktops. Presumably you need to fill the gap with own ff. New blind - green? The lone cupboard looks odd but could look worse if you remove it. Different wall colour to tone down the harsh black tiles? But your money is better saved for a new one later.

Put some shelves up on the blank wall (not over the hob obviously) and put some nice neat things that draw the eye. I would go with practical stuff like 6 matching cups, 6 matching bowls etc. Leave the rest. I wouldn't pick the black tiles but 2 years is too short a timeframe to be worth changing stuff that is clean and modern, but just not to your taste.

You could paint the tiles but I think it's better to live with them.

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 10/03/2019 10:47

I assume right hand gap if for fridge.
If you're going to redo I a few years, I wouldn't bother apart from styling with nice accessories. Save money for new kitchen.
It's pretty likely that tiles go round single wall cupboard so removing it will look awful.
I'd put a couple of ikea floating LACK shelves to fill in that gap

QuietlyQuaffing · 10/03/2019 10:50

Ah of course, I was assuming gap for WM for some reason but FF makes much more sense. Maybe you don't need shelves on that bit of wall then. If you're buying a FF I'd get a silver one.

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 10/03/2019 10:52

Just noticed oven. It needs an extractor over it, choose one that you can also use in new kitchen

8mileeminem · 10/03/2019 17:30

Thanks for the ideas. Yes my tall slim white fridge freezer will be going into the gap. What colour kettle/toaster and worktop accessories should I go for?

Replace the doors for white ones.

BruceAndNosh · 10/03/2019 17:43

I would have kettle toaster etc in stainless steel, and maybe paint the walls a strong colour

burritofan · 10/03/2019 18:01

If you're redoing it in a couple of years I would do very little to it now and just live with the (awful) tiles etc while lusting, dreaming and Pinteresting/Instagramming. Would perhaps paint the walls to personalise it but otherwise it all looks good quality, albeit not to your taste.

I'd do stainless steel toaster/kettle or whatever you have already, as they'll go with anything – you don't want to splurge on a coloured toaster with a plan for a particular kitchen only to find your taste evolves in a couple of years. Not sure what you mean by worktop accessories?

DaffyCactus · 10/03/2019 18:03

I think I'd have some fun with it and do something I wouldn't dare do if I was spending £10k on a new kitchen.
Either:
Paint the cupboards black and the walls dark green. The tiles will blend in (you might want to regrout?). Lots of reclaimed scaffolding shelving, plants, vintage knick-knacks.
Or, paint the units white and go with the black tiles to create a monochrome black and white theme with some bright accessories.
I can't see the counter tops but you might need to replace them cheaply to tone in.
Or just leave it as it is. It really doesn't look that bad to me (owner of a 1990s country pine montrosity!)

Ariela · 10/03/2019 19:01

I'd leave as is till you've used it a fair bit and can decide how you'd improve it. Has taken me 15 years to decide best way to alter our layout!
