Do you think touches of an alice in wonderland theme can be ''grown up'' or is it too childish?

I am redecorating my living room and bedroom soon. I am in my early 30s and want to go with a more grown up ''look'' but i still would like to add touches of my favorite movies from childhood, such as alice in wonderland for one example.

Like i said, i want to add touches but i dont want it to look too ''child like''. I have an alcove in my bedroom that i am going to put shelving up in, and on the wall behind the shelving i was thinking about having a plain black silhouette mural of alice falling down the rabbit hole and one of the shelves i was going to have an alice in wonderland themed decor. for example, I have a disney figurine of alice sitting on a big mushroom, a red mushroom design tea cup and saucer, a playing card, a small wooden secret door, etc etc

if it helps, my flooring is light grey wood, the walls are staying white and the bed frame is black faux leather and my bed covers usually theme around white silver with sequins and/or crystals on them. bit plain at the moment.

do you think this in one small area like described above could look ok? or too childish? if anyone has any suggestions on how to pull off a more adult look with this theme id appreciate it.

Thank you

The mural could be fab, if done right.

You lost me at figurine, though.

Tbh, as someone who's living with a DH and DSs, I'd love to be able to decorate however I wanted (as it sounds like you can.) I say go for it! What's the problem if it's so-called "childish"? It's your home, have what you like.

Thanks for your replies. i mentioned figurines because im having shelves so obviously need to fill them with something so thought as the wall mural would be alice, that one of the shelves could have a couple of alice related things on it.

You are right I guess, its my home so I should have what I like, I just don't want it to be feel too child like.

I am trying to upload a photo of the mural this this message but its not letting me (maybe im doing something wrong? I like '' post message" and nothing happens)

When we were viewing houses we came across a house that had black framed prints of pages and quotes from children's books. It looked really cool so we are thinking of stealing idea when we decorate our new place. But love the mural idea if you are creative to do that it's brill!

BabyBird21 · 26/02/2019 15:36

that is actually a good idea, i might steal that one too lol. what do you think of the figurines etc to fill the shelves? you think it will look tacky if its kept minimal?

go for it. It's your house :) There are lots of ways you can add touches of your favourite things in your room, personally love the idea of the silhouette ....I have a lot of my favourite movie quotes in frames around the house (including several from Alice in wonderland!). Do what makes you happy, life's too short not too.

thank you. yeah you are right. im not a very creative person in that interior design context so i was struggling for ideas to add touches, the framed quotes. will have to try and think of other ideas.

could i just ask, in your opinion, do you think red would go as an accent against against greys/silver and white color scheme? trying to decide between having a bit of red as the accent colour in the accessories or a blush lilac/purple color

Do you not have your own stuff though ? My house is decorated to fit with my stuff - books and ornaments and textiles and pictures - which mean something to me. Isn’t it better to make the place fit you, rather than coming up with something based on other people’s imaginations?

BabyBird21 · 27/02/2019 00:34

yeah i understand what you are saying, but i love the whole silver/grey white colour scheme, but im a bit OCD about things matching, and the decor i have (pictures, figurines etc) that mean something to me, that show my personality are a mix match of colours that i feel would clash and not fit in with my colour scheme but im reluctant to get rid of things that i like just to suit a colour scheme, like you said.

im not just thinking that i should just probably stop worrying about everything matching so much, i guess a few shelves with some colour on it isnt going to be a big deal.
