Large storage cupboard in bathroom - yes or no?

I’m shortly going to have my bathroom re-done. Currently the house has very little storage and I have no where to put bedding, sheets, duvets, spare duvets, pillows and towels.

I was thinking of having a cupboard installed in the bathroom which would be around the size of a double wardrobe. It’s big enough to take it but wonder if anyone has experience of this. I worry that they might get damp and I don’t want damp bedding. Thanks!

I'm thinking of doing the same. We have a large cupboard where the hot water tank used to be, and I'm thinking of getting it converted in to a cupboard with shelves for towels and drawers for toiletries, cleaning products etc.

Can the cupboard open out onto the landing rather than into the bathroom?

TokyoSushi · 25/02/2019 12:51

We used to have this in our old house - it was great!

Nacreous · 25/02/2019 12:53

When we did this we put a little oil radiator in, so that stops any damp by keeping it warm. Agreed that out on the landing would be better though.

Unfortunately no, the door to the bathroom itself would be in the way.

Didn’t the stuff get damp?

Possibly an odd suggestion but if you can arrange it so that the hot water supply for the shower or sink runs behind the cupboard, that would help keep everything warm and dry. Also have slats or holes in the cupboard door for airing.

We have a big linen cupboard like this. The radiator pipes run under it so they heat it and prevent damp. I also store any spare bedding like duvets and pillows that doesn't get used very often in vacuum bags. I don't take all the air out, so they don't get too squashed down.

Bagpuss2304 · 25/02/2019 13:09

I like the idea of a small radiator, as the bathroom will be completely ripped out I could get a small radiator plumbed in.

Have you considered underfloor heating (for both the room and the cupboard)? And yes to slatted shelves! I forgot that detail.

A radiator wouldn’t prevent damp on its own. You’d need adequate ventilation too. Otherwise, you’ve just got a hot steamy room.

We have one. No radiator in it but hot water pipes run across the back and the shelves are slated. No damp - it's in DD's bathroom and she spends forever in the shower with the door shut. Love it, can store mountains of bedding & towels.

We have an airing cupboard in the bathroom. It has the boiler in it and a clothes rail for drying delicates would def recommend it

RaffertyFair · 25/02/2019 15:31

I have one in the bathroom - it was the old airing cupboard when there was a hot tank . It now has much more room and a small radiator at the bottom. I store all towels and linens in it and no dampness.

IM0GEN · 25/02/2019 15:32

We have teh same as Amazonian. Slatted shelved and hot water pipes running through it. No damp, although we do keep the bathrrom well aired. No extractor fan but the window open on all but the coldest days.

I would feel weird about having bedding stored in the bathroom. It doesn't seem quite right. Bathrooms can be smelly, for one thing, I like my bedding fresh and sweet smelling!

Plenty of storage for towels and all the bathroom bits would be brilliant though. I have a large built-in corner cupboard in our bathroom for all of these bits. It takes up a lot of space but means the place generally looks tidier / uncluttered.

Just to reassure you OP, smelly bedding has never been an issue here Grin

Thank you all for your responses. Certainly given me something to think about with plenty of options. 😃

We have one, it was already an airing cupboard, we took out the old hot water storage tank and plumbed in a radiator. Slatted shelves, sensor lighting when the doors open etc. It's brilliant, it holds so much stuff. If we had the same again in the future I would get a towel rail plumbed in that can run off the central heating or electrically.
