Another one

What would you do to this room for 10 year old girl?

We’ve recently done Dd’s (11) room in our new house , pink was definitely a no no. We went for 1 wall papered with matching lampshade and bedside lamp, Laura Ashley day bed, so easy when friends come for a sleepover. Furniture is white chest, wardrobe with mirror and two bedside tables from a local furniture store ( fab quality) and then to keep it a bit trendy we got a white Kallax unit from ikea so she could chose different storage boxes etc and then added the desk table.

HumptyNumptyNooNoo · 24/02/2019 11:10

Wall stickers/decals that peel off easily would be great on the white walls -and can be changed easily as she grows up. Bed with trundle under for sleepovers. Desk under window. Wardrobe and bedside next to bed. Stick with white furniture and get colourful bed linen. Add various white lack shelving where you can for teddy zoo .

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 24/02/2019 11:18

Agree pink is too young. My 9 year old is very scornful of all things pink.

I'd get her to make a mood board on Pinterest to use as inspiration.

rumptifizzer · 24/02/2019 11:33

Make it grown up so definitely not cabin or high sleeper bed.

White ikea furniture.

Colour the walls of her choosing and a roller blind at the window.

White bedding, it goes with everything and looks crisp and fresh even when you don't iron it!

Lamp, lampshades, rug in matching colours.

Please come back and show us the finished effect.

Nothingunpleasant · 24/02/2019 11:34

How can a colour be “too young”?! You either like it or you don’t. It’s just a colour!

PCohle · 24/02/2019 11:38

I think kids are very susceptible to peer pressure and what's "cool". My DD was very keen at that age not have stuff that was "babyish" and for her pale pink would have been perceived that way.

I think all people are saying is don't assume a 10yo girl will want a pale pink room. If does then great, go for it.

LooseSeal2 · 24/02/2019 11:44

My DD is almost 10, her room is a little smaller.

She’s gone for red & white theme as she already had a white cabin bed (the IKEA one a pp has posted), but her ceiling slopes above the bed and she’s adult height so think we might have to change that soon.

Apart from the bed with desk under it she has full size drawers, wardrobe, ikea KALLAX storage & a narrow shelving unit.

This doesn’t leave a lot of floor or wall space though.

NothingTraLaLa · 24/02/2019 11:47

I got DD (11) this one - storage underneath and a trundle bed for when her friends sleepover (saves me having to faff around with blow up beds).

I've just completed my 10yo bedroom. She had a high sleeper and hated it. Completely done with toys now so didn't need the playing area underneath, and pink decor was most certainly out.

We've gone for a three quarter bed so that she can have friends for sleepovers without having to sleep on the floor. She can also use the bed space to do her studies. New grey laminate flooring. She has a large double mirrored wardrobe from next and matching drawers. Accessorised with a glitter pink lamp, LED chandler and grey/silver walls with a feature lilac wall. She LOVES it. And all done for just under £1k

burritofan · 24/02/2019 12:26

Can we see a floor plan for door (& which way it opens)/radiator, please? Also the bump-out wall by the window with the access panel – what's in there and how frequently do you need the access?

Nearlyadoctor · 24/02/2019 13:12

Pic of Dd’s Wallpaper - easy to pic colours out for curtains, lampshades etc.

Temporaryanonymity · 24/02/2019 13:17

I bought cabin beds for my sons when they were 10 and 7. Two years later they've outgrown them and have both asked for beds. A costly mistake, in our case.

steppemum · 24/02/2019 23:16

How can a colour be “too young”?! You either like it or you don’t. It’s just a colour!

because a lot of girls like pink when they are younger, but it feels too little girly once they reach 12.

How is that in any way hard to understand!

Nothingunpleasant · 24/02/2019 23:27

steppemum so because “lots of” 12 year old girls think so you have decided it is the case for everyone?

Weird! 😂

steppemum · 24/02/2019 23:45

no, don't be ridiculous, but it is a very common theme, and if you are doing a room for a 10 year old, it is worth bearing in mind.

Your comment was how can a colour, be too young
The answer is because many girls feel it is a little girl's colour.

Whether you think that is a good or bad thing is another matter, but it is certainly something that does happen in our society.

Nothingunpleasant · 25/02/2019 01:08

My comment was because a poster said pink was “too young”.

You sound like you want a fight but I’m not biting 😀😁 steppemum

steppemum · 25/02/2019 10:16

You sound like you want a fight but I’m not biting

not remotely interested in a fight, just reacting to being called weird when I answered your question Hmm
Don't think I'm the one after a fight here.....

MsSquirrel · 26/02/2019 12:33

Hard to tell what you can fit and where from the pic. If your dd has sleepovers the Ikea Hemnes daybed is great but you obviously need the space to pull it out.

My dd (11) has a desk but also has the Ikea Alex add on unit which we wall mounted (like pic below) and she uses this as a dressing table. I suppose it could be also be used as a desk area.

If your dd does like pink F&B Peignoir is a lovely, grown up sort of mauve/grey/pink. I'd change the carpet to a beige toned one, in Polypropylene so it won't stain.

mrsm43s · 26/02/2019 15:59

We did my DD a whole new room in an extension when she was 11/12ish.

She was definitely very, very over cabin beds, which she perceived as babyish. Her request was a double - her room is not massive, so we compromised on a small double. It's an ottoman bed, and so has storage underneath, which is really useful.

Although in her previous room, she had duck egg from 8-11yrs ish, saying she'd outgrown pink, in her new room she picked pink again - but a blush pink, and silver glittery feature wall! (not my choice - a bit blingy for me, but I'm not a teenager!)

She has an IKEA Malm dressing table, with a mirror over it - this also doubles as a desk. She has Malm bedside tables/drawers - these come in lots of different sizes, so are useful for fitting and making the most of odd spaces.

We used an IKEA kids wardrobe (stuva I think?) in plain white, and changed the handles to something more grown up, because these give you drawers underneath, with hanging space above, and utilises the space well. Once the handles are changed, they don't look childish.

So overall, storage and IKEA would probably be my suggestions!

Re paint colour - its cheap and easy to change, so let her choose.

Absolutely great ideas Thankyou so much. I'll attach a floor plan if it helps .

Love a floorplan! I would lay it out something like this (pic 1), with:

• Single bed with drawers underneath
• Little bedside table – or a small wall shelf to take up less floor space?
• Built-in desk under window, DIYed – literally just some 2x4 battens around the walls and basic pine plank attached to top. Drill a hole in the back for plugs/wires for lamp, computer when she's older, etc. Paint it any colour she likes! Add a chair, boom, it's a desk.
• Combine the wardrobe/shoe/teddy/books storage etc against the wall between door & access panel (pic 2) & go "bespoke" – DIY some shelves with wood battens, add a rail for clothes (Ikea do a wall-mounted one), line of Kallax with boxes at the bottom for toys, etc.

Keep it shallow, maximise the vertical, maintain access to the access panel (bathroom plumbing presumably?). Rail could be shifted up once your daughter is older/taller (in the version I scribbled she is a giant).

Basically skip the "furniture" as such aside from the bed & use shelves, rails, hooks, etc to maximise floor space.

Get her to pick some paint & curtain colours et voila!

Brilliant plans, I can't wait to put some of these ideas to use. Thank you. Lots of ideas for me to go at.

My dd has decided on navy blue and gold for colours and she would like a pineapple theme. Any ideas greatly received.

DS2's bedroom is a similar size and it actually feels so much bigger since we got rid of his midsleeper bed. Whilst they do mean you can potentially fit more in they really visually dominate a small room. And it is such a pain to change the bed.
