Underlay under vinyl floor tiles

Our en-suite has no heating in it, not helped by it having a concrete floor. The flooring is really cheap vinyl that needs replacing. I'm not honking the best option may be vinyl tiles.

As it's a cold room I was wondering if it's worth putting underlay under the tiles to keep the heat in a bit.

Any thoughts?

I'm planning to put down vinyl tiles because I love the colour and pattern, but I've been advised to put down a layer of lino first. I will watch to see what advice you get in case I should do what ever you do!

You would need special underlay, not the stuff you use for carpets. If your going to put down vinyl type tiles which require gluing, then whatever underlay you use, it will need to be firmly attached to the concrete or the tiles will just pull at the underlay and it will move. Best option is to have 3/8" plywood put down first. You could even have a few sheets of flexible polystyrene put down first, then ply on the top. Then add you vinyl tiles to that.

Alternative option if you have the funds, is to have underfloor heating fitted. its relative;y cheap to run these days at around 60-80 watts a square meter, about the same as light bulb. Then a trades person can cover that will floor levelling compound and your floor covering can go on top of that.
