Self-standing bath - need your views!

What's good and bad about self-standing baths? I'd love some user views as I'm about to redo my bathroom and don't want to make an unnecessary mistake.

I love a long bath, once or twice a week in the evenings, and being rather tall and stout, I do need a decent sized vessel in which to recline and read. But I hate baths that immediately lose half the heat to warming to bath itself. Had a cast iron bath once - never again, for that reason.

I live alone (adult DCs) so it will be My Bath.

There is room - just - in my bathroom for this.

We have just had our bathroom done and I opted for a shower bath. It looks like a stand alone bath and looks quite posh.
This means the dust and dirt doesn’t get behind the bath just to the side. (If u get what I mean)
It’s also cheaper and just as good. We made ours posher with silverdale taps.

Don't do it! Stand alone baths are meant as "statements" ...to make your bathroom look current/swish/in vogue. They are great for those folk who rarely use them.
As a "bath lover" I hate mine. I can choose whether to have my feet OR my knees OR my shoulders under water. It is impossible to stay warm.
Try one in then showroom. Check where the overflow is and try to work out whether you can keep under the water (i doubt it).
Also ...there is nowhere to put your book or glass of wine Smile
I have given up and am about to replace mine with a traditional shape. So, if you are in the North West, I have a stand alone which is about to be "skipped".

Samandcj, my dear poster, you have decided me. Nowhere for my cup of tea? No total submersion? You have saved me from a life of regret

Which is t to say Crazy's good point about cleanliness went unnoticed! Thank you!

Think you need an omnitub

There was a thread about free standing baths the other day. I adore mine, probably one of my favourite things in the house!

Mine is next to a wall under a window and I don't find it gets particularly dusty or dirty at all. I remember needing to get used to it because lying in it was different to my old bath. I'm reasonably tall (5'9) and I never get cold in it. DH sometimes gets in with me and even after 15 mins it's too scalding for him still Grin

I have a bamboo tray for toiletries/book/tea etc. I bath at least four times a week in it.

Orcinus now I'm stuck again!!

Mine has wide flat edges so is perfect for a book & cup of tea wine

However, the angle of the back combined with the curved short side is so bad for my back. It's an oval shaped bath and the sides get narrower as you sink (iyswim), so my shoulders are scrunched forwards. I wish I'd tried mine out in a show room, not just sitting in it, but lying how I'd actually be using it.

OrcinusOrca · 07/02/2019 20:58

I am surprised how easy I found it to get used to. I LOVE it! As a PP said maybe see if you can get in some in a show room and see how you find it?

I don't know why so many are not fans on here. I would always choose one in the future if I could.

We have a freestanding one and I love love love it! It’s huge, comfy and I can get well submerged in it, I’m 5ft8, DP nearly 6ft and also loves it.
We had to get the smaller size but that was due to the bathroom size restrictions anyway.
This is ours victoriaplum.com/product/mode-tate-freestanding-bath?options=size%7C1500_x_700&LGWCODE=FSB001;147049;8907&ds_kid=92700037836520678&gclid=CjwKCAiAy-_iBRAaEiwAYhSlA0JtOeDJ1Tf0gDpwXIfCQxX1484rOCCgmuqEE0z0a08oicW0HbiPmhoC_ksQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Our sink unit it immediately next to the bath, so drink/books go on there, but I imagine without it would be a bit of a pain. That said, my brothers bath is not freestanding and whilst it has room to balance a cup, you can’t put a book anywhere, so that restriction isn’t necessarily down to the bath itself

fusioluxe · 07/02/2019 21:08

We had one in our last place and it was the worst thing ever. Looked glorious, didn’t function. Water slopped everywhere and underneath so it smelled damp if you didn’t mop it straight away.

The shape was odd, too slopey and inverse trapeziumy, and it felt weirdly exposed, I couldn’t relax!

babycatcher411 · 07/02/2019 21:09

I did get in about 4/5 different styles in show rooms to test them out to make sure, as I was concern the steep sides might make it an uncomfy bathing position, but it’s fine. And I regularly take (very) long baths in it.

@babycatcher411 🙌🏻

Pumpkintopf · 07/02/2019 21:39

As pp have said, get a nice bath caddy for your candles/book/cuppa/wine!

MsSquiz · 07/02/2019 21:58

We've chosen this bath for when we get our bathroom redone in a couple of months as we don't currently have a bath at all!

We tried it in the showroom, I'm 5'1" and can completely disappear in this bath - meaning both knees and boobs can be underwater at the same time! And DH (6'1") can also lie comfortably in it.

DH has already bought me a bath tray/caddy that fits across the width that has space for both a huge mug of tea or a glass of wine!

You absolutely need to try baths in person in the showroom. We nearly gave up on a freestanding bath after DH and I couldn’t find one we both found comfy (there is a foot of height difference between us). Then we found one that was fab (Clearwater sontuoso).

Having said that, it’s a hell of a lot easier to find a comfortable built in bath.
