Marble dining table - yes or no?

So we're currently in the market for a dining table.

I'm leaning towards a marble one, partly because I love it, and partly because I thought it would be easier to maintain than a wooden one with three young children - but google would disagree ! Apparently stains don't come out if left for longer than 0.5 seconds?! Ok maybe I'm exaggerating abit but stains are part of life with three young ones so I'm feeling on edge already!

Or are the new marble dining tables made in a such a way that stains DO come out easily ? (Please say yes).

It will be used for eating on (obvs) and homework, crafting, colouring, all that kind of stuff.

Oh gosh I'm beginning to regret ordering this coffee table now 😫

Is there a treatment I can get to prevent staining?
Why didn't I think of this blindingly obvious issue before ?!

Kescilly · 29/01/2019 23:51

@kalefire my friends bought a house with marble countertops and found them impractical. They put some sort of protective film down on top and it was done so well I couldn’t even tell. This wasn’t in the UK so I can’t give you a product recommendation, but might be worth looking for something similar here?

nutellaontoastgirl · 29/01/2019 23:52

@kalefire you can cancel the order ? It's not here yet is it ?

Sticky back plastic it is then 😫🙈

It's in transit, all the way from Bulgaria ! And it's so so gorgeous

Oooh do you have a link/pic kale? You're fanning the marble dream flames again Grin

Kale that is a thing of beauty. Rest assured, you will not even want to put your cup down on that. Just admire it from afar Grin

That's the plan... with a couple of posho coffee table books that don't ever get opened

OlennasWimple · 30/01/2019 01:03

Marble tables should only be in the kitchen, so you can make wonderful pastry on them, IMHO Smile

flugelhorn811 · 30/01/2019 07:29

Oh sorry @kalefire - if it helps, we really really haven't been careful with ours, it's had all sorts of mugs and plates put on it. It doesn't sound like yours will have the same wear and tear!

Wallington · 30/01/2019 13:04

I've had a marble topped side table for a few years, it hasn't marked at all but it's in the "good" living room so no kids using it. I'm very careful with if as even water can stain marble.

I'd only have a marble dining table if I could cope with it getting marked or chipped.

fabulousathome · 31/01/2019 04:21

Granite would be hard wearing. I have a beautiful round granite Kitchen table. Nothing has marked it yet and it's 7 years old.

purplepingu · 31/01/2019 05:35

I have a table in my kitchen made out of the same quartz as my worktop. It's white with a grey vein so looks like marble. It's easy to clean and if something stains a bit of Bar Keeper's Friend gets it off.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 31/01/2019 05:44

One word: turmeric.

nutellaontoastgirl · 31/01/2019 09:12

@purplepingu that sounds ideal! Something like that would be lovely. Or yes, granite but I'm assuming I wouldn't get the same pattern or colour in granite.
