Repainting furniture

I'm wanting to re-paint a sideboard that was previously painted with a chalky white paint.
It doesn't necessarily need to be re-painted with the same type of paint, ideally I'd like something wipe clean and a bit more hard wearing as it's in the playroom and well used.
Any advice for a novice? Do I need to sand and prime? What type/ brand of paint would work best? I've watched a few YouTube videos but they mainly focus on painting furniture rather than re-painting, if that makes sense?
Any advice would be gratefully received Smile

I've no experience of repainting but I will say that the furniture I painted last year was far better in chalk paint than the eggshell I tried first, I thought the eggshell would be harder wearing but it didn't look right at all.
The drawers I painted are not used a lot and there is a scrape on them already which puts me off painting furniture that would be used more as I don't like the shabby chic look so much. I have attached before and after pics but I thought I had one of the eggshell which unfortunately I can't find.
Although I was keen to avoid sanding, it really wasn't difficult and didn't take long

Have you thought about using chalk board paint? It could then be used for drawing as well? Alternatively you could cover it with a sticky back white board, it comes on a roll similar to fablon but can be used with dry wipe markers. Chalk might be a more sensible option depending on ages though Smile

I would give it a good sand then use the Zinsser primer designed for surfaces which have already been painted. Then use either any satinwood paint - and you can have it colour matched if you like or there are lots of colours available - or Rustoleum furniture paint in satin finish. I've used both types of paint successfully. I was particularly impressed by the Rustoleum on MDF shelving in our pantry and it's been really hard wearing.

You could apply wax or varnish over the chalk paint to make it wipeable

I painted my DD’s pine furniture with Rustoleum. Jeez look nice from afar. The where it ends. The wax i used gave a horrible colour. I used white paint and the wax made it look like it has been in a smokers house.

Im thinking of sanding the worse bits and just painting them again.

Sounds like you used Rustoleum chalk paint Starlight. Not the same paint that I used.
