Help me decorate/arrange this room

Moving in a few weeks, new, overly house. Excited, but a bit intimidated. We've always had Victorian/Edwardian with loads of period features smallish bays etc. This is a 1950s detached. I'm excited by the prospect of a bit of mod century modern, but I'm a bit stumped by how to arrange the living room.

We know that we will be putting a log burner in and ripping the current fire surround out.

The rectangular bay, which is 2.1m across stumps me.

I'm thinking built in shelves to left of fireplace, TV on right. Wondering how the hell to dress the windows, given how narrow the side ones are. Do I put in a window seat?

We currently have large 2 seater sofa and 2 wooden framed mid c moderns style chairs.

Help! Esp with what to put in bay/how to dress with blinds/curtains/shutters.

Estate agent pics attached.

Anyone?
Are you all too busy decorating your normal shaped rooms?

I'm equally stumped OP! I'd be interested to know the answer Grin

Could you put your large sofa at the far wall (where their sofa is) and have a 2nd smaller midcentury sofa in the bay? The ones with dansette (sp?) legs give the illusion of space. It could even be snuggler/cuddler size if that works better in the space. With a rug and coffee table to tie them together...
Would one of your chairs fit comfortably behind the door or is that too crushed?

The only other thing I've come across in awkward rooms is to rehang the door opening to the other side or outwards into the hall. The latter might give you more options for accommodating a chair and tv/storage furniture at the near end of the room either side of the door and in the alcove.

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 12/01/2019 21:24

Could a single folding door work? Saves a bit of space and would make your room more functional at the door end. I quite like the panelled ones.

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 12/01/2019 21:32

If you have your large sofa on the far wall bring it forward a bit. This gives the illusion of space too Grin
Ditto the sofa in the bay (if you go in that direction). Try and bring it forward a smidge away from the window.

And have a big leafy plant Grin

Our sitting room is almost exactly the same shape, position of door, bay window and fireplace. We also have another window on the wall opposite the door. We have a 2 sofas arrange in an L shape, one in front of each window. The area from the bay window to the sofa doesn't have anything in it. We use it for a Christmas tree. TV is to the right of the fireplace. Console table to the left. We have lamp tables either sides of the sofas.

Not sure if that helps or hinders!

Could you do a sofa in the bay (chair and a half size), one on the wall where the current tv unit is, and then have the tv over in the other corner where the door is? Re hang the door so it opens into the hallway. Then use any space in the alcove where the tv unit currently is as storage?

pattimayonnaise · 12/01/2019 22:02

Not sure if that makes sense, should have said put a sofa where the current corner unit is (which is next to the tv unit!)

GerbitaFillsbottomMcSimmons · 13/01/2019 12:49

Ohh exciting. I would put your sofa against the far wall and the two chairs facing the sofa on the opposite side of the fireplace so it's symmetrical. The shape of this room calls for a symmetrical furniture layout in my mind and allows the light to come into the space. You could invest in shutters for the bay, it's quite a big square bay so it will fill it in a little bit if you know what I mean. Otherwise you could just get some nice roman blinds custom made in a fabric of your choice. I wouldn't do curtains in that shaped bay. You could then get an MDF day bed (with storage if you want) made to fit the length of bay. Paint it the same colour as the walls and then get some cushions made or just stack it with store cushions. Good luck Smile

Just to say, what a beautiful room! Lovely light in there.

Best of luck with the move!

Putyourdamnshoeson · 13/01/2019 19:13

Thanks everyone!

I like the idea of shutters and of symmetry. Not sure about where to put the TV then though. This is the one and only TV room, so it's not an option not to have it. The family room that adjoins the kitchen and dining room is only going to have a radio.

Could you get a padded bench or an ottoman for the bay? Or can you fit a sofa in it? How low is the window?

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 13/01/2019 19:19

Where is the TV right now? You might need to use the same spot because of aerials etc.

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 13/01/2019 20:48

How big is your tv? I've never had my tv on the wall but a hinged wall bracket could be the solution.

Either in the alcove or the wall between the alcove/door. That way the tv could be flat to the wall when not in use and tilted out+forward for viewing.

Or a corner tv unit in that alcove. Not sure if the angle would be a bit limited for sofa viewing however.

junebirthdaygirl · 13/01/2019 21:33

I think whats offputting here is that couch arrangement. When thats gone it will become clearer. I have exactly the same as Schloss. Couch along window but more forward and another one Lshaped to that. You could put 2 chairs here.
Behind that, against the wall, so directly opposite the door we have a large sideboard going the full length with lots of frames photos on and a lamp on one end.
Tv one side of fire and console table on other side with lamp and large photo frame. Ottaman in the centre in front of fire.
Very sociable room, easy to chat, gather around.
Some paintings over console table/ fireplace and alongside door.
I think on curtains you can put a rail running from one end to the other that bends at the corner. Need specialist advice.
But blinds would be great.
Its a great room and will look fab.

Putyourdamnshoeson · 13/01/2019 21:48

There are TV points in both alcoves and sockets everywhere. Which is great. I'm not mad keen on wall mounted TV, but will think about it.

I agree that current sofa is blinding me. It's a similar story throughout the house to be honest! I can't wait to just get in.

we had a similar bay and put in a narrow table that was used for a big vase of flowers / magazines etc.
