Neutral or coloured sofa?

We've been in desperate need of new sofas for a while and are taking the plunge in the sales. The choice of style has been tricky but we think we've decided - what we can't agree on is the colour. DH wants neutral (grey or black) as we will have to live with them for a long while, but I'm tempted by ochre or blue because I think grey has just about had its moment and black is dated already. They will need to last several years though. Will I regret a strong colour and wish I'd played in safe with neutral sofas and bright cushions?

If you get a strong colour just make sure it’s an easy colour to match to curtains & accessories. I love my bold coloured sofa but find it difficult to update the room with curtains or pillows as it’s such an odd colour to match. Nothing is quite the same shade.

I'd go for neutral. Coloured and patterned sofas can look dated very quickly. I guess it depends how much you're spending and how often you'll replace them.

We were finding it difficult to choose between tan and creme, tbe supplier offered to send one of each to try ( we were buying a pair). Having each been completely unable to decide, within seconds of seeing it in tbe room the choice was obvious to both of us, fortunately we both preferred the same...

Would seeing it in situ be pissible?

Neutral. I know someone who spent a fortune on a coloured leather sofa- soon hated it as it limited change to decor options. Had to live with it for several years.
I agree that grey seems to have dated quickly.
Brown, cream, black go with lots of cushion/curtain colours.

Loaf do some neutrals that aren’t grey or black, more beige. What fabric are you considering?

Bluntness100 · 04/01/2019 20:43

I wouldn't consider black a neutral. That's really a statement that will dominate a room.

Neutrals are more beige, taupe, cream, that sort of thing,

If you need it to last, go for a texture or pattern because that will hide any potential marks better.

Blue is difficult to decorate round and quite draining

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 04/01/2019 22:21

Well that was pretty much unanimous! I am outvoted.

It has to be grey or black because the current (expensive) curtains are grey and won't be changed for a couple of years yet - brown/tan won't go and cream isn't practical (I'm guaranteed to spill something on it even if the kids or cat don't). So its statement black or neutral but possibly dated grey. Hmm.

Grey is dated. Black is overpowering.

You could go for stone or very pale blue or that green blue which is storm like, but in a pale shade? I'd do the latter.

There’s a grey black checked one on Sofology - would that work?

They also have some lovely pale lemon and pink and purple - would work with the curtains

I love our bright blue velvet sofa. It's joyful.

I'm not a matchy matchy person and haven't had any problems (yet) with it going with other colours.

amazonianwoman · 06/01/2019 22:43

Greige. Will work with grey curtains. And pretty much every other colour.

Neutral or coloured sofa?

Neutral. And just change accent colour for throws and cushions whenever you choose. Ours are a neutral taupey colour.
