Totally stuck with ... gulp, Green carpets

Perhaps I briefly inhabited a parallel universe where green carpets looked good, because I cannot otherwise explain why I have carpeted my study and living room with them.

Now - of course - I have no idea what colours to use in the rooms! The living room I have rugged to death and tbh it looks ok.

But my study?!? It's a 3x3 m south facing downstairs room with a period art nuveau black fireplace which features lovely blood red tulips. But as I don't want to work in Santa's grotto I'm thinking red is out?

I want a modern light feeling to the room. It will have white floor to ceiling bookcases. Other than that ..,

Please help. I can't afford to put right my mistake but I don't want to make it worse!

Looks brown to me.

I love the carpet! I think an apple white colour on the walls would look lovely.

That’s got a fair bit of brown in it too. I’d stick with white for the walls, or potentially a coffee cream kind of colour that picks up the warmth in the pile.

That is indeed a challenge, OP. Grin On the plus side, it’s too sagey to be Santa’s grotto.

Can you get a massive rug so most of it is covered?

If not, you could always do a sympathetic soft white like F&B Wimborne White or even something with a whiff of green like Lime White or James White.

Have you played with any colour scheme generators? Health warning: can be as addictive as MN and Fortnite.

I wouldn't cover it with rugs. Own it. It's the only way. It is quite neutral so pair with neutral walls. Then strong coloured accents to draw attention.

Dark green or dark wood on some walls / furniture, strong mustards to accent might work.

CottonTailRabbit · 31/12/2018 12:14

Damn. Just noticed you want light and modern. Screw the dark green then.

A muted pink?

I have a green carpet in my living room - north east facing. I have a feature wall - with a pale gold metallic sheen and pattern. The walls are a pale tan colour. I have accented with darker greens and turquoise and changed bookcases etc to be glass and metal. I love it. it is very fresh

How about something like F&B cornforth white?

buckingfrolicks · 31/12/2018 14:39

Oh thank you thank you thank you! So many ideas. All may not be lost.

How about Farrow & Ball Off White? It looks cream in bright sunlight and pistachio in duller light. It’s not a colour that I would have considered but was used in our sitting room by the previous house owners and I really like it.
